I sent my pipes off to have the Atom Bomb treatment. I have read that you should get the Gatling tips in order to take advantage of the air flow and sound out of the exhaust after this mod. My question is...has anybody removed the black restrictor plate in the stock tips and just run the tip wide open. If you have, how did you re-attach the tip as I assume the pressed fit threads would be destroyed in the removal of the black plate.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure exactly how you would cut out the center if the tips without destroying them. With the proper tool, new rivnuts could be installed if you had to fabricate a new center plate. I would just try them first without mofifying. I don't really think the tip will affect the sound all that much, but I have not tried the stock tips on mine. I may just to see if there is any difference. You'll love the sound of the new pipes though.

I personally don't think you'll like the look from behind with the stock exhaust because of the rear opening on the muffler itself.

I removed the black plates from mine when I was running honkers (unbaffled and wide open in the rear) . You just drill / cut off the brass retaining nuts on the tips to pull them out.

A couple points to make about this:
1. If you don't seal up the backside of this, you WILL get yellowing on the rear bumper area.
2. You will want to paint the inside of the tip charcoal grill black as the chrome is crap on the inside.
3. You will need to buy new nuts and bolts to attach the tip to the muffler (get acorn nuts for the bet look).

My bike when I had the honkers

How did you seal the back side up? Are you saying you did not like this look? My plate is Jetson

VSpot - I ghetto fabbed in part of a heating duct reducer and riveted to the muffler. I loved the look with the Honkers as they were open in the back of the muffler. The stock and S1L1 are closed in the back with a hole for the exhaust that mates to the hole in the stock tips. There is probably less opening with the stock and S1L1 pipes to worry about over the honkers (2+ inches on the honkers).

sunburstguitar - I LOVE the overall sound of the honkers, until I put in cams. Way too loud for me. #57, Rick, has the same setup and loves his. On the highway it was too droning and after 30 min on the bike I couldn't wait to get off. When I was VFCIII, intake plate and honkers was when I liked the sound the most (sounded really mean). After the cams it really opens it up and became deafening.

The nuts that hold the tips on are galvanized steel, not brass. When I modified mine for a real mini-gun look, I re-used the riv-nuts, welding them to the original inners with a T.I.G. weder. On the original exhaust, the sound is not changed, as the opening out of the muffler is not changed in size. I am currently modding my stock exhausts for a bit more sound with the help of a 26" extention drill. -----Metalguy

Well, I just drilled out the rivnuts and removed the black exhaust tip inserts. Those things must weigh a pound each. Not only will I get a rumble but I have reduced the weight of my bike to boot.
