A while back I posted that I had switched to Rotella 5x40 synthetic with terrific results. Engine and tranny much quieter and smoother shifting. With 1100 miles on the oil I was running with my Hardly buddy on east I-10 about 75 mph. We swung out to pass a semi and he jumped on the gas and naturally I did the same. I hear my engine reving and the tack winding over but no increase in speed. Never had this happen to me before with any bike. I back off confused. So holding a steady 75 crank the throttle again. Same thing. I get in front of the Hardly and get off the next exit. We discuss the situation and conclude that's it's clutch slippage. Finish our ride, about 100 miles, but no cranking on. No slippage. Go to the auto parts store and buy a new filter and 100% dino oil. Pop the drain plug, oil is black. Put in the new oil and filter, take her back on the freeway, no slipping. Been good ever since. I would appreciate any feed back. Is it just me or what?

never used the full syn, i hae always used the t5 or on occasion a mixed the t6 with str8 rotella 1.25 qt t6 3.25 qt str8 rotella 15w50. never had a issue. I would think rotella would be great for our clutches, it is a high detergent oil

to do a conclusive test you would have to run every single bike through the paces to come to a conclusion. But short of doing that, use what oil works the best for you. I have used a full syn almost from day one, the bike started on Vic oil, I went to AMSOIL about the third change. I use AMSOIL 10w40 or have used Rotella 5w40 with absolutely no issues. Just drained AMSOIL 0w40 out of the bike with nearly 7,000 miles on it, blackest oil I have drained from 'er so far, absolutely no clutch slippage at all. Also, with the 0W40 it did not give me the 'end of oil like' rattle like all the others do. Vic oil would make my engine rattle around 2,500 miles, and the shifting would get troublesome. AMSOIL 10w40 would start the rattle around 3,500 to 4,000 and I would run it to 5,000 or so. Rotella would almost be the same. This 0w40 is miffing me at 7,000 miles and no rattle yet, trans shifts fine, and no other problems. I'm going with Rotella 5w40 this oil change.

So here's my assessment, first, folks have said that mine don't slip because I ride like an old man. Well, they've never rode with me, and most folks that do ride with me want to know what fire I'm going to, and they ain't no old man. Second, I believe it is your clutch composite because I can't help but believe they slap clutches in this things by different manufacterers, I just happen to get a good one along with many other folks.

One last note, in case you are wondering, I've got 91,500 miles on the clock in just 42 months. That's over 2,000 miles a month if you have a hard time doing the math. Still has the orginal clutch, changed the fluid once so far.

I've been using 10w40 Amsoil for many years and have never had a slipping clutch in any of my bikes including the Vision.

Am I missing something 91,500 Miles and you have changed the fluid once?? Is that you body fluids?? I would not believe you are talking about the oil in your Vic

I thought the same thing for a minute and then figured he's talking about the clutch hydraulic fluid.

Just curious why you're going back to Rotella when the 0w40 has done so well.

because I have it on hand, and really I wouldn't want to run it that long. Since I have the rotella I'd also like to see if it is the bike settling in or is it really the oil. If it starts the rattle again with the rotella, most likely the 0w40 will be it for the rest of its life.
