Cottage Grove, Mn | I joined the Patriot Guard in October of 2005 and have been on over 2500 missions. It is without a doubt the most gratifying thing I have done in my life. I have four grandchildren in the military. Three have been to Iraq at least once and two are now deployed in Afghanistan. Thank you all for your support of our military in way you can and PLEASE remember them in you thoughts and prayers during the Holiday?s. |

I had it suspended when I got my 5th DUI. • Officer: May I see the owner's card for this vehicle? • Biker: It's not my bike. I stole it. • Officer: The motorcycle is stolen? • Biker: That's right. But come to think of it, I think I saw the owner's card in the tool bag when I was putting my gun in there. Officer: There's a gun in the tool bag? • Biker: Yes sir. That's where I put it after I shot and killed the dude who owns this bike and stuffed his dope in the saddle bags. • Officer: There's drugs in the saddle bags too?!?!? • Biker: Yes, sir. Hearing this, the rookie immediately called his captain. The biker was quickly surrounded by police, and the captain approached the biker to handle the tense situation: • Captain: Sir, can I see your license? • Biker: Sure. Here it is. It was valid. • Captain: Who's motorcycle is this? • Biker: It's mine, officer. Here's the registration. • Captain: Could you slowly open your tool bag so I can see if there's a gun in it? • Biker: Yes, sir, but there's no gun in it. Sure enough, there was nothing in the tool bag. • Captain: Would you mind opening your saddle bags? I was told you said there's drugs in them. • Biker: No problem. The saddle bags were opened; no drugs. • Captain: I don't understand it. The officer who stopped you said you told him you didn't have a license, stole this motorcycle, had a gun in the tool bag, and that there were drugs in the saddle bags. • Biker: Yeah, I'll bet he told you I was speeding, too.

Be careful showing WBC your wrath. They are a bunch of lawyers who hope someone physically assaults them. That's how they make their money. When the assholes came to Lamar Missouri (small farm town, population 4500) to "protest" the city required them to get a permit for assembly that specified exactly where they could stand. They got their permit. Before they arrived, the locals in addition to PGR completely filled the permitted assembly area and lined the street along the route the funeral procession took. There were more people in the town that morning, lining the route, than live in town. Local law enforcement were part of the turnout, both in their official capacity and off-duty. WBC arrived, took a look, seeing the filled up lot and the people along the route, and left. No one said a word to the assholes, but they knew better than to stick around.
There were people from all around the community there in support of a fallen hometown boy. Everybody from schoolkids to Grandma and Grandpa. Old farmers to little kids.

WBC next visit in Missouri was to be in Weston Missouri (population 1650). They (WBC) never even entered the town. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/blog-post/2010/11/westboro_church_...

You show up to show your respect and gratitude to a family that gave up a part of themselves, and don't mention anything about anything or anyone else. When you say you're there to keep THEM away, then you've acknowledge THEM, which is their goal anyways. Think about it... |

That's a valid point, but--did you look at the pictures in the link I posted? It wasn't just about WBC. Folks out here in rural America are very patriotic. And... they cling to their guns and religion and the Constitution. Note the 11th picture down. The sign and flag are hanging from a city utility truck. There were several flags held in this manner over the street the funeral procession went down. It was about PFC Reid, not the WBC. The WBC just felt uncomfortable around that many patriotic Americans and left of their own volition. They prefer places where they don't have to see that many patriots in one place, like a big city.
I know that most on this forum are just as patriotic.

New Bohemia, VA | As it should be, thank you! I'm moved at even the thought of the price someone paid in their life for another. There are always people like WBC, they just happen to more vocal and active about it. The sad reality is, it is their freedom to do what they do that those of us who served, served for. I don't agree with their theology either, not one bit, but it is pointless to argue with them. The best that we can truly do is stand firm in what we believe in. While in our mind rural America represents what America is truly about, we no longer live in that America. It's best for those who hold fast to our values is to hold fast before it is all gone....

New Bohemia, VA | another thought hit me...would there have been such a turn out of "support" to the family had the WBC not shown up, or said they were going to show up???? Before you respond, think about what I am saying... As a matter of support, we should always give our guys and gals a sign of thumbs-up, #1, or a salute when we see them on the highway. Today, I passed by what appeared to be an older Viet Nam era Navy Veteran, with rank and Navy patches on his sleeve. I fly the U.S. and the POW/MIA flag on my bike, so instead skootin' on down the road, I fell in and gave him escort to my exit about 5 miles down the road. He may not have known what I was doing, but it was the least I could do. I rendered a hardy salute as I merged off... We should always show support to the family's of those who are serving, or has lost a son or daughter in the conflicts. I've got a Blue Star Flag, my son is an Infantryman with a tour in Afghanistan under his belt with less than a year in service. I pray that we will never fly the Gold Star banner or anyone else. It doesn't take a wacko to make me show support. I know that everyone feels like I feel, so, if you think I've fallen off the deep end, you're right, when I was three I climbed up a bookshelf to get a toy my Momma was keeping from me and fell and busted my lip and head...now you know my excuse...

Jasper, MO | Chris, I've been to your part of the country and I understand that displays of patriotism may be rather rare as a matter of course. I worked in Washington DC for a time. That place has become as unpatriotic as anywhere.
You would just have to come out here to the rural country of the Midwest to see for yourself the difference in attitudes between here and the big cities. The announcement of the possible arrival of the WBC may have given an added impetus to the turn out that day, but we still salute the flag in our schools each morning. The towns out here are small and there is a lot of farm ground in between each of them. The 4th of July is still celebrated as a celebration of old fashioned American values; God, Country, Freedom, and an appreciation for those who have served to preserve the values. Something like 90% of the total population occupies 10% of the land mass in the USA, which of course translates to 10% of the total population occupying 90% of the land mass. Wichita, Kansas City, St. Louis, etc, are big cities in my book and I avoid them. Missouri would be a very good state to live in if we could give Kansas City to Kansas and St. Louis to Illinois. They screw up the rest of the state. Wichita produced the WBC group. Yeah, we are the minority. I'm staying here in the country.

New Bohemia, VA | Ronnie, I am in total agreement with you, and know and understand the small town, eastern, mid-west, and western town atmosphere. It is indeed grande to know that there are towns like this that exist. We have a radio station that has a local student or class that says the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, and then a local artist or band will sing the Star Spangle Banner across the airways. We even have schools that still teaches Bible classes, I get it, I know it. But there is another side that is continually creeping in that will take you back when you find out it's right next door to you. I've been around this great big world, lived and visited a good portion of the United States and terroritories, and served with men and women from all walks of life. While I only study from afar, I'm always interested in the atitudes and thoughts of people and knowing where they are from. My roots are from Southwest Virginia, one of the poorest regions of America, yet some of the most kinder people you'll have met. Mostly miners (and shiners), even there, not everyone thinks the same, or believes what everybody else believes. I think the same is true of Jasper, despite that most likely everyone knows everybody, literally, with a population of about a 1,000 folks... By the way, we had teens from our church travel to Joplin to assist and encourage those affect by the tornados.
