I just sent my stock cans off to BobVic today. He recores stock Harley mufflers and they sound fantastic. He sells them mostly on ebay. I sent him some pics of the stock Vision mufflers and he's willing to give it a shot. I've asked him to install the 2.25 inch baffles. Of course you would need to run the Gatlin tips to get the full effect.

After looking at the pics I sent him, he said there was about a 75% chance of it working. Worst case, I just lost my stock mufflers and 20 bucks in shipping money. Best case, we all just found the best sounding Vision exhaust on the cheap... These suckers will be loud and deep!!!

I'll keep you guys posted...

I'm working on a set of stock mufflers myself. I have started the taking apart of one muffler. I believe you can do a lot to these because of the chrome heat shield hides the muffler. Won't be until fall before I can really tackle the project. My garage is not air conditioned, and it is hot in Houston. I'm also going to try and reduce the weight. One comment about the Gatlin tip. I think they look great, and so does everyone else. But I believe it changes the sound of the muffler. It does on my Stage 1 Level 1 mufflers. I still have my stock tips, so I'm thinking about modifying those also.

The stock tip outlet is very small and restrictive. It will be interesting to hear the differences between the gatlin and the stock tips with a large 2.25 inch straight through baffle. I know they made a BIG difference on the S1L1s.

This was something I was wondering about myself (modifying the stock mufflers for better sound) so keep us posted.

Hot in Houston!!!! thats like the understatement of the year, and "yes Virginia" there really is a need for air conditioning in these parts, especially in the garage!

It's Nice and Cool in Sugar Land - OK, no one will believe that.

Anyone drilled out the end baffles on the Vision yet? I did that to my old Suzuki for an inexpensive cheap thrill. Granted, I have only had my Vision for a week and have not gotten down and peered into the pipe ends, but what would happen if someone drilled a few 1/2 inch or smaller holes in the end plate?

Just a thought.

I have heard drilled stock pipes... Not really much louder than stock. Gimme a week to get these stock pipes back and we may all have a very cheap, good sounding pipe.....

I just put the Cycle Dragons on yesterday and pulled the stuffing and baffle pipe out of them.

I like the way the sound! There's just a big empty cannister there now. I have the stage one map already, but I thought there was supposed to be something in there. ?????

So did you have any luck with the re-coring of the stocker pipes? If so, I'd like to send off my stage 1 pipes before I toss em in favor of another set.

Great news!!! BobVic emailed me today and he is able to recore our stock mufflers! He will be finishing mine up tomorrow. I went with the 2.25 inch core baffles (his loudest and deepest sound), but he can do smaller sizes as well. I will let you guys know how they sound as soon as I get them back.

Please do. I will be looking forward to hearing your feedback on these pipes. I bought my bike with the Stage one, level 2 upgrade installed. I will have to buy a set of stock pipes to send if I decided to take this route but I can probably pick them up for pretty cheap. I have connections with people who have no Social Security Numbers anymore! LOL J/K, but I do know eBay!

Yeah, I'd like to know, too. I had the S1L2 put on as part of the purchase deal, but I kept the stocks. A price would be good, too.

Today's update:

Bob said the packing inside my stock cans were trashed so he had to order new packing. Said he should have them completed by tomorrow. Price should be $125 + return shipping as that is what he quoted me...

Here's his email response about the packing:

I use long strand ceramic glass. It will not burn or blow out once it is broken in. It takes about 500 mile to do this. The packing in the stock muffler could not be re packed as it was also welded in.

Tell Bob to expect some work ahead if he succeeds. I priced out the Sage 1 Level 1 installation at my dealer and they wanted around $225.00. That with the $499.00 MSRP they keep quoting me at the Parts Counter puts them over $700.00. I saw a Pipe set on Ebay for $375.00, but Polaris still wanted $225.00 to install.

On a side note - Does anyone have the Flash Mapping Card for the Stage 1 Level 1 Pipes? I can get a set of pipes but the person selling them does not have the FLASH Card needed to install the MAP. And is the Map limited to only one bike? Polaris charges $100.00 to $150.00 for the map flash card.

But if Bob sucessfully modifies the Stock Pipes, I would rather pay him to do it .

The card is a one time shot. Once it is used, it can never be used again. If a dealer screws up on the install, he would have to eat the cost of the card and supply another one.
Basically the sequence goes like this.
1. Hook the bike up to the computer and start "Digital Wrench"
2. Choose the option to reflash the bike.
3. The software will give you a code.
4. Then dealer logs onto the dealer website, enters the vehicle VIN and customer information, Enter the code produced by Digital Wrench, and enter the number from the card supplied with the pipes or purchased seperatly.
5. Dealer website then produces a key that is then entered back into the Digital Wrench Software.
6. Digital wrench then proceeds to reflash the bike.
Nothing to it.

Thanks David - I thought it was something like that. Like Microsoft, Polaris has learned how to squeeze a buck out of someone for a few lines of computer code.

Looks like if you owned a set of pipes (with the mapping) and you had the dealer put a new set of pipes on it and give you the old pipes back, then you should be able to get the original mapping back also since you paid for it.

But that makes too much sense.

Stock OEM mapping is the only thing a dealer can do with out having a code.

UPDATE:

My stock recores will be shipping shortly. Just received this email from Bob:

I got them done ready to ship. Total price is $194 Mods $160 packing $12 shipping $22. You can send to PAYPAL Bobvicr@aol.com. Came out nice. More work than I expected

I will let you guys know as soon as I get em! :dp

Just to remind everyone, Bob removed the stock baffle from the stock pipe and recored it with a 2 1/2 inch spiral core baffle. These pipes should be loud and super deep sounding for less that 200 buckazoids (can anyone name that old computer game?). My Stage 1 pipes may be for sale soon...

I asked him to send some pics. If he does, I will post them. If not, you guys will have to wait till next week for the pics...

Success! These new pipes are WAY louder and deeper that either the S1L1 or S1L2. I'm uploading videos now, but my camera cannot pick up all the bass and loudness differences...

Videos to follow....

Interested to see how they act with the Stock OEM MAP or even the Stage 1 Level 1 Map. Let us know performance also.
