All,

Has anyone tried the current gernation, 16GB Nano work with the Vision's radio system.  I have 150GB HD version and the Vision confuses it such that the software has to be reloaded to get it unstuck.  I would like to add some  more tunes over that of my old 4GB Nano.

Thanks in advance.

Tim

I know the iPod Touch works faultlessly with the Vision but I'm sure about the new iPod Nano.

I have the 16 gig Nano and it has worked perfectly ever since my dealer downloaded the iPod upgrade from Victory (about 2500 miles ago).

Do you know what software/hardware radio version you have on your Vision?

Thanks,

Do you have a 8, 16 or 32GB Version?

Thanks,

I don't know the particular software/hardware version I have on my Vision. I purchased mine in June, and I only know is that when my iPod did not work initially, my dealer told me they just needed to upload the most recent iPod software into the Vision's computer, and that fixed it. I just have the stock Vision radio (no satellite, CB, intercom or GPS) with the iPod cable. I should also let you know that my iPod did freeze up on me once, but that was after sitting outside in some really extreme heat (the iPod's operating temperature range is listed at between 32 and 95 degrees F, and "non operating temperatures" at below -4 degrees and above +113 degrees). We can get some really hot days here. In any case, I just reset the iPod and it has been fine since (I have had this same problem in my cars before, although very infrequently).

I am using a 16GB Nano; not the one that just came out last week, but the version before that.

Sorry I am not more technically savvy, and don't have more specific information, but I hope this helps

Hey, Tim, have you tried just doing a hard reset rather than reloading the software everytime? I, too, have the 160 GB Classic and when mine does that I just hold the Menu (center) and Pause buttons at the same time for a few seconds. That forces it to reset everything, but it brings it back. Then, or course, I have to go back in and reset all my play settings, but all my music is still there and saves some hassle. You can even do it while riding down the road, but I don't recommend doing that, of course.

On a side note, I finally gave up hassling with it all the time and put the old cable back on and use my little off-brand MP3 player. That'll work until I get around to buying a Nano.

Thanks for the info.  I guess I should read the iPOD manual (RTFM) =).

On another note, when you see the size in iTunes, it is 149.X GB versus the advertised 160GB.  I hate when they use base 10 for advertising versus base 2.

Also, I looked on the apple site.  It looks like they discontinued the 160GB.  I only see the 120GB on the site now.

Okay, since I'm new to the whole iPod thing, what are the main issues with iPods and the Vision?
I thought that any of the hard drive based iPods were problematic, but that any of the flash memory based units worked fine. Is that the case or is it a software/generation issue of the iPods themselves? I have tons of music on my computer (I actually up-loaded every single CD from my collection, no internet downloads) and just want to be able to play my tunes through the factory system. Is there a listing or database showing which iPod models / generation version works with the stock Vision stereo?
I don't mean to hijack this thread, just wondering if there's a simple answer out there...

You are not hi-jacking the thread.  It would be nice if there was a concise list somewhere.  There are some Radio version / iPOD version issues.  People are reporting that some of the iPhones do not work.  Others have reported that some of the Nanos do not work.  Early on, some of the hard drive units got destroyed, but it is not clear if it was electrical or mechanical issues that caused thier destruction.

A concise compatibility list would be a helpful purchasing guide.

When searching for an MP3 try to stay focused on units that are Flash based. ( No Drive) If the player has moving parts its going to suffer from the vibrations that are put upon it from riding. Had a Zune 30 gig (Purchased prior to getting my Vision) that started to fail so I eneded up with the Zune flash player. The downfall is that the audio quality is not the same. 2nd gen nano that I borrowed sounded better than the my zune. I do continue to reseach a flash player that has optimal sound quality but know that anything other than the apple product will need to connect thru the standard audio plug. I do mount my MP3 on the dash with velco and it does allow me to use the controls while riding.

TimS: I do agree that a nice survey / spreadsheet of real world results pros & cons of all players used on our visions would be nice.

Possibly put under product review.?

To maintain the table, we would be able to re-edit the post periodically.

Moderator, is there a way to do this?  Keep a living up-2-date table?

Thanks,
Tim

This was posted last Sept. at thevmc.com:

Hey all Gary (woodlandvic) and I attended the Vision Service Class yesterday Sept, 28 2007. We got a lot of information on the Vision and I will post a thread with some pictures.

We were told to let all of you know which includes dealers, sales and mechanics, DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT use your IPod on the Vision. These instructions, warning is limited to the IPods that have the "Hard" drives in them. The resonance from the Vision will destroy the hard drive. We were told the IPods that have the "Flash" drives are OK.

At the time that post was made the Visions we rode were pre-production but deffinatly created issues with the hard disk iPods. Victory hinted that there might be a fix for it but stuck with the "resonance story". I suspect it is probably a combination of software issues and resonance.

hard drives don't like being bounced around, flash drives are more forgiving in the long run.

I just bought the new Ipod nano 16GB 4th generation, It will not charge on the Vision (It will just display a message that charging is not supported with this accessory). So far I have tried the usb cord that came with it, my old usb cable from my mini and firewire cable and that works, I have also tested 2 different docking radios and so far the jensen (orb) worked and the other one is a sonic impact i23 which does not work. Pin configuration should be the same so my only thought (conclusion) right now is that the voltage is the same but the draw is different.

Any one else having this problem?

Based upon Connie's report, I will make the assumption that the iPod cord on the Vision is not compliant with Apple's most current standards. Apple changed the pin-outs -- eliminating the FireWire charging port in favor of the USB charging lead.

Many 3rd party peripheral devices, including AC adapters, car chargers, docks, speakers and FM transmitters do not charge with the current 4g nanos or 3g iPhone.

Victory took a short-cut on the iPod interface cable - buying a 3rd party unlicensed product. If they had signed up for the "Made for iPod" licensing, they would have had the correct pin-outs and approved 30-pin connectors.

The online apple store has some decent deals on factory refurb ipods; which allows you to get a previous generation ipod with a warranty that works with the Vison and does not have a hard drive.

I'm thinking about replacing my 4 gig nano with a larger unit.

Hippo,

Is there a PIN layout diagram published anywhere, maybe we can just swap wires on the harness or buy a new IPOD cord and re-terminate the radio side with the Victory connector???

Thanks,

Tim

Just found these.  Time to do some homework.

iPhone and iPOD PINouts:

 http://pinouts.ru/Devices/ipod_pinout.shtml

http://www.allpinouts.org/index.php/Apple_iPod_dock

Hippo,

You maybe correct.

Pin 18 is +3.3VDC

Pins 19,20 are Firewire +12VDC

Pin 23 is USB +5VDC.

If they went from +12VDC to +5VDC, the Vision will most likely need a transformer plus a wire-swap.

Do you have any more information on the latest cable spec?

Tim

I have an 8G , 3rd gen nano. When I had problems the dealer downloaded the latest software with no improvement. I read here that some of the ipod cables were defedtive. I sprayed WD-40 on the cable and threw the ipod in a drawer for a month, frustrated. I hooked everything up a month later and it all works perfectly. My thoughts? Cables that small you cant solder, but, there is an oxidation issue. The WD-40 eliminated the oxydation problem.

I just had the bike flashed so I finally picked up the 4G, 16Gb Nano. I also have the same issue. I think you're onto the right answer with the cable pinouts. My iPod controls and sound function properly but the iPod does not charge. Mine died after about 300 mi today. Converting a DC voltage is going to require a diode as a voltage regulator. The trick is going to be finding the tolerances of the iPod (voltage +/- working range) and then finding the correct diode to drop the voltage somewhere in the middle. This is assuming that Apple cannot "switch on" the Firewire input with a firmware upgrade. I'm no good with software. Bringing this to the attention of Apple may take ahile. There is a good possibility that they eliminated the hardware from the 4G to support this. I doub't Victory will re-engineer the cable any time soon but who knows?

There is a cable issue. Has anyone taken the time to have the dealer replace the cable? It is a warranty item.

Did they update the cable to remedy the 4th gen firewire port elimination already?

New cable purchased from Pure Polaris 10-12-2008 will not charge a iPhone 3G. It's installed on a 2009 Vision Premium. The bike was manufactured 08-2008. All other features work fine.
