Today I had to ride 7 hours in 116. deg. F. to get to town and back. I use long-sleeved, white under shirts while gettting around. I'd like to hear what you other veteran heat endurers have done that works.

I can tell you from experience, that wearing an Under Armour heat gear shirt helps out a great deal in the heat. Although I must say that here in the Northeast, we are getting ripped off with the good old fashion summer heat this year.

Here in Vegas, where 100+ is the norm for 4 months of the year, there's only one thing you can do for the heat. Don't stop. Ever.

The heat in the Houston area has been brutal this year, plus we have a ton of humidity. I have a light colored long sleeve fishing shirt, you know the kind with all the vents and pockets. This is really good for a cover over a cotton T shirt. I prefer cotton to the Under Armour material.

So I'm hearing that many of you prefer longsleeve shirts in the heat. Why is that?

I'm about a 90% long sleever. On the around town, I might just t-shirt, but on the trips I do the long sleeve, mostly to keep the sun off, and the other, so I can have at least an extra layer of skin if I go down.

Winter, it is full leathers all the time, and trips I'll pack the leather, and will wear them when the temp dips to around 70 or below. I know it don't make since, I'm not trying to keep warm, I just get really hot above 80 even when on the run and sweat profusely. I feel like I'm going to pass-out after a while. That don't make sense either, wearing all that leather in case I pass-out and go down....

I wear long sleeve "white" light cotton shirts. Mostly because of the sun and no hot air blowing on the arms and getting myself dehydrated at highway speeds. In town, not so much.

+1 on the long sleeve fishing shirts. On rides other than work day commute the white long sleeve fishing shirts from Maegellan and Columbia work well plus they advertise that they offer some ultrviolet light protection. Plan on picking up one or two more before heading out for Sturgis.

What works for me on the few hot days we get up here is to wet my t-shirt then do up my jacket. The wet t-shirt acts like an air-conditioner in side the jacket and you still get the protection. I usually have to stop every 45 minutes to an hour to re-do the wet t-shirt.

Dehydration is the reason I wear long sleeves. There is a balance I believe between evaporation which cools you and dehydration. That is why in high heat days with long distance I wear white or light colored shirts and neck wraps and light colored helmet. I always were jeans, but buy the pre-washed color for summer use. When I ride like this I feel cooler.

You guys didnt buy the factory AC? No wonder the heat bothers you.

That Pure Polaris jacket with the hose connections was a good investment and the helmet really works well with the built in com system. Only problem is the wife thinks I look like a dork in it.

White Mesh jacket and a wife beater under it is awesome. Also proper positioning of the lower wind deflectors to neutralize all that engine heat works wonders too. White white white forgoe the badass black look, the white gear on all of the Visions looks HOT <-- sexy not temperature blah blah blah

I can see that with a little photoshop work that suit could make a great poster for SongFan.

Who is going to be the first to post a picture of a rider in a space suit on a Vision?

In the interest of fairness there is a major drawback, besides the $1500 price tag.

The only public restroom that accommodates this suit is currently (as I type) passing over Southern Australia at aprox. 217 miles above sea level. Therefor minimizing its usefulness for anything but short trips.

For longer rides, I always wear Leather. Leather Jacket and Pants, both with a wicking mesh lining. I open the vents on the jacket and nice breeze comes through, very cooling and doesn't let me dehydrate too fast. For some reason my legs aren't really affected by heat or cold, so the wicking is enough to keep me dry and cool with the breeze the sneaks up from the cuff. If it's just a short ride, or extended low speed... then I go the long sleeve usually white heavy cotton shirt route.. with light undershirt to act as a wicking.

My preferred way to deal with anything over 70 degrees... is to either stay home or just ride at night. I don't use the word "hate" often... but I am certainly no fan of Sun or Heat. When we go SCUBA diving, if a boat ride is involved, I put on the wetsuit on shore before we leave!!!

I have been thinking of ordering a cool vest (http://www.polarproducts.com/bodycoolingevap.html). These are not as expensive as the "motorcycle" styled ones. I ordered a neck tie from this site and will be using it in 2 weeks on a ride coming up. I talked to a BMW rider who was wearing an Aerostitch 2-piece suit and he puts ice cubes in the pockets. The jacket is breathable but waterproof, so he said once he got going the cool air came through his jacket like A/C.

I ride with the Victory Platinum Jacket and have used the mesh jacket liner on really hot days. Unfortunitely, the jacket and mesh jacket are black so they can get hot when stopped but are good when moving. Most of my days in MN are not too hot so I have not tested the mesh yet on an extended hot drive.

So I'm hearing that many of you prefer longsleeve shirts in the heat. Why is that?

Something I read about in the book Proficient Motorcycling. Light colored long sleeve shirts are insulating, which works both ways. When the temps get hotter than your body heat, the air moving over your body may still feel good but its actually causing you to heat up faster (convection). I stopped at a store last year and bought 3 white, long-sleeved shirts that I wore constantly when I had to to ride a few days through Southern California, Arizona and New Mexico. It helped a great deal with the heat and kept my arms from sunburning (worse) while I was on the road finishing my trip. I got burned pretty nasty (and I'm naturally dark) riding through the Great Salt Flats and Nevada a couple days earlier even though I kept up with the sun screen. Right now I'm ducking inside beating the heat (109 deg) between waxing sections of my truck. The bikes next.

Miles,

It has been freekishly hot in San Antonio the last three weeks. The lows have been about 75 to 78 and the highs 97 to 106. Only four days have been below 100 since this started. We normally have this kind of heat in August.....Not June and July.

I am still riding every day but the ride home is a little warm. I get hot from the sun not from the Vision Freedom 106.

Here in Tucson, we know all about the heat. 112 tomorrow. What I use is water soaked evaporative vest under a First Gear vented jacket. Good for about three hours. Probably wouldn't work that well where it's humid.

+1 This stuff also has UVA/UVB deflection within the material. Great stuff.

I wear shirts I purchase while in Iraq and Kuwait. They are very light, have 70+ sun protection, and the wind against them keeps me cool. I think the shirts are columbia river, maybe an off brand. I got them through the Sportsmans guide. I always wear long sleaves cause I get sun poisoning when I expose my arms and shoulders to the sun. Big problem on many rides is that I am in an MC so I must wear a vest, at least around Arizona. We ride in the heat the cold, when it rains etc. Hottest I ever rode was two years ago, to Vegas the low road. This is down 8 to Gila Bend, then back roads across the rest of the desert up past Havasua, Laughlin, and then on to Vegas. We saw temps of 135 and know that on the road it was hotter. Wife had portable mister going full time. We went through two cases of water. We were towing trailers at the time. Get your self a good quality mister. BTW in Arizona, when it gets as hot as it does, riding through the heat is like riding into a blast furnace. It is actually cooler stopped than riding.

As Vision Tex said earlier, the heat has been brutal here in Houston the last several months. I also wear a long sleeve Magellan fishing shirt, a cool wrap around my neck and as a real crowd pleaser, I wear a 70 oz Camelbak. I have found it much better than a cup or bottle to stay hydrated and with a perspiration index equal to the amount of fluid held by the Camelbak I'm not making any additional 'bio' stops.

Stay cool but more importantly STAY HYDRATED.
