Hey all,

I am curious...how far did you get on your first set of tires? I made 10k and probably could have gone to Sturgis and back (1500 miles round trip including day trips while there).

I opted to put new tires on BEFORE I left for Sturgis and after all the rain, etc., AND the better handling, I am glad I did it. I found that when I leaned the first time it took MUCH MORE lean to get the bike to turn than after 9k on the tires. Although I felt like I was leaning farther, I was definitely more comfy in the turns. I had no problem dragging my highway pegs with the new tires. Prior to the new tires, I was beginning to wonder if I was just getting older and more nervous about turning.

Is 10k about right? The dealer said I am one of the lucky few that got more than the 7500 he has been seeing pretty regularly. I usually get 10k ~ 12k miles before replacing on any bike I owned with exception to the crotch rocket I owned for a while. That bike was good to about 5k but I also rode that bike HARD!

I did opt to go with Lops again due to the 1/2 price for the tire(s) if installed by the dealer. It still ran me close to 430 bucks. Is this price about right? All of my other bikes I could have tires replaced for roughly $200. Is the time to remove the rear tire really that bad which could have cause almost 200 more in labor?

I can get the Elite III's for about $336 a set. My Metric dealership down the road charges $47.50
per tire, even if you take the wheel to them off the motorcycle. Bunch of new policy BS! I used
to take a tire to them off the bike, and they'd put a new one, not bought there, on for
$17.50. So anyhow, That would make my cost $431ish, just like yours. BUT, I am going
to search out someone with a tire changer in a home shop type scenario to avoid this $47.50 per
tire BS.

Wow, short miles. I got 18,000 out of my first set of dunlops. I will be going darkside for my next rear tire, however. It costs me quite a bit less to get my tires changed when I take the wheels off the bike myself, which is really not all that hard to do. It is harder putting them back on, than taking them off. I did notice that on this bike, both tires wore out at the same time. Really odd, as my other bikes were almost 2 rear tires per 1 front. I may buy a tire changing rig so I can just do my own at home, and avoid the dealer costs, and use dynabeads to balance. I have them in the rear tire of my darksider RAT bike, and really like them. At speeds of over triple digits, it is still perfect, no problems, or vibes from the tire. -----Metalguy

10k is on the low end. i usually get 14 - 15,000 miles out of the rear maintianing a 41psi in both tires. front takes me around 22,000 on out side, 19,00 on the low.

I changed the front at 19.5k, I could have run another 2k, but was leaving for a trip and wanted the new tire. Replaced with a new E-3, $159 and 37.50 to install and my local motorcycle tire dealer.
The rear tires have had issues with nails and pieces of metal. I was able to repair one and ran it to 12k, but was leaving on a 5k trip last year so changed out. It would have gone 14-15k. The rear E-3 I have on now cost me $195 and 37.50 to change out.

EJ, all I can think is these guys getting more than 10-11k miles out of a rear are riding it FAR beyond the wear strips. I've replaced 2 rear tires each at 10k. The front tire was below the wear marks on BOTH sides of the center hard strip on the front E3 at 15k. That is the ABSOLUTE worst mileage I've ever gotten on a bike tire in 40 years of riding.
I put an Avon Cobra AV71 on the front, and I have the Avon AV72 shipping to me as we speak. So far I love the Avon front and it is hardly showing any signs its been ridden over 5k already. Best part is no hard strip in the center.

18k?? Wow! I got 11k out of my rear tire. Had to change it, there was absolutely no tread left.

Front tire looks good so far.

Guys as you approach 15k miles I would make a friendly recommendation that you look not at the center or outer sections of your front tire, BUT rather look at the 1" to both the right and left of that hard 1" center strip where the wear bars are located. I think that you'll find you are down to the wear bars and due for a new tire since this area is the area most in contact with the road where it counts, curves.
You can ride them bald for all it matters to me, but I would really feel bad reading about someone going down or worse because they read the tire wear wrong and I didn't say something. I got caught out on this myself and found my front really slipping on a trip, I got lucky. I'll say nothing more on this matter as we are all grown ups here. Ride smart and safe..... T

I have 10K on my stock tires and figure I've got another 4 to 6K left in em. It looks like these tires are averaging from 12 to 16K.

Must be me! most I ever got out of E3 rear was 11K. I went through 3 sets of E3s in 31K. I am on Metzlers now and plan on running this out as soon as I can get back on bike! I have a backup set in garage.....
I do NO burnouts, no spinning tires or brakes locking up.
Takes too much out of clutch, tires and driveline components.

Wait a minute! Just had a fleeting thought! I have a Street Primo and my Gal hardly gets to ride with me. I bet lack of passenger/trunk does make a dramatic difference in the rear tire wear.

Those getting over 12K must ride fast enough to get "lift" as not to wear the thing out. I rarely ride 2 up and only get about 10K out of the rear and not much more out of the front. I check pressures every 2 weeks and run them at the correct pressures. My wife keeps up with me most of the time so I don't think I ride too hard. I may also change tires earlier than some, you only have 2 and it is the wrong place to get cheap...........................

Changed mine out at a bit over 13,00. Probably could have gotten a thousand or two more, but I was getting ready for a 3000 mile trip, some in the mountains, and ran on the "better safe than sorry" theory. Glad I did it, especially when I came to the "Pavement Ends
-Loose Gravel" signs in the rain. On my second set of Metzlers on the KP, but I got the Dunlops (Elite lll) on the Vision. Seems to me they're pretty damn good tires.

A simple question to all you posters. What type of road surface do you ride on? Does concrete surfaces wear the tires out faster than asphalt or the other way around? Is it cooler where the owners get better mileage per tire?

RedRider, I'm on a mix of asphalt and concrete with moderate tempatures, 30's winter - 80-90's summer, here in Va. I get the same mileage on my 900lb bike and radial dunlop E3's as I did on my 750lb bike with bias Dunlop E3's. Around 22,000 on the front, and around 14,000 - 15,000 miles on the rear, pushing it.

I'm riding on most of the same roads as varyder.

My rear tire was toast @ 13750, finally changed it last night @ 13872, back to like new machine riding!

I'm a slacker Bill, I wait until someone says, "Hey, looks like you need new tires...."

to me that is great mileage for an E3 because it is around 13,000 that I start watching them closer...

I'd sure like to see some closeup picures of these 12k and over rear tires folks are running.
bigwill, yes passenger/trunk do make a difference in the tire wear on big baggers but not much. From prior "model" experiences I'd guess about no more than 1k difference orat least thats what my HD's would run without the tourpack and/or passenger.
Roads here are no different than those previously mentioned and I ride all over the USA on the bike. I could have done probably 12 on the last rear but replaced at 10 as it was starting to feather (lower front higher rear tread wear).

Top picture is rear, bottom is front. Not down to the wear indicators yet, guess the mileage.

I just rolled 8100+ miles, and the front tire looks like a Farmall front tractor tire, with the middle part very high compared to the sides. Rides like crap, Like I'm on marbles, especially over 65 and in the rain over 45. They are the original Dunlop E3's. Will be replacing very soon. Surprised at Dunlop for their "NO RECALL" policy. These could kill someone.

Doesn't everyone know, chrome is "Faster".
