My local shop's inspection guy wasn't in today so I went up the street to a HD dealer get the inspection done. While I was waiting one of the sales reps started talking to me. I told him about the new XC and XR and what they are designed to compete with. He said they had just had someone trade a Vision for an Ultra this past weekend. I cannot imagine why someone would do this. The comfort alone is way better than an ultra. While still waiting I sat on one on the showroom floor just to compare. I was so cramped and the floorboards were spongy. I guess to quell some of the vibration. I still can't figure why after a Vision anyone would go HD.

Yeah, that is a mystery in life. I was talking with a Harley rider the other day that actually complimented the Victory line and the Vision. He said he had a friend who had about 15,000 on his Vision and traded it in on a UC as well. I didn't say anything negitive, because it is to each their own. You'll find a few Vision riders on here that still own and ride their Harley as well, or say they're going back to HD. Everyone has their reason and their perceptions. Personally, I would switch in a heartbeat...when something better comes along...I know I have a very long wait...

Actually, one does get spoiled to service. HD makes you pay through the nose but the dealers are numerous, skilled and they cooperate with each other. My Victory experience has been.... different. I've been to a half dozen Vic dealers and although they may be all right, they are like dogs with a bone in comparison to HD. I've only tried the service department at one dealer, and that is the reason why I went looking at other dealers. nuff said.

I am happy that the Vision is designed so well and has no chronic design weaknesses that I've experienced so far. That way, I can ride and stay away from the dealer.

1. Did you actually see the traded in bike?
2. +1 on KevinX's reply if so.

While I'm glad and kindof proud to see Victory address some of the basic selling points that show Victory builds a bike with superior features.... those items are only of interest to someone who is looking to buy a "superior" bike and the "features" will get them to look at Victory and realize the obvious, or at least the obvious to us.

However, as I have and others have said it too many times to count..If someone wants to buy a Harley, there is only one brand option, a Harley. Not everyone buys a motorcycle because it's well built, or for the ride or whatever... Doesn't matter why they buy what they buy... as long as they do whatever makes them happy.

Id have to add, Dont believe everything you are told. I suspect if that is true, then the person should have probably traded his sack of manhood on a newer bigger one and not bowed to peer pressure or HD marketing. Afterall, HD sells clothing beltbuckles and
wallets as their main product. Victory sells motorcycles.

Why does it always have to be a competition? Victory didn't build the Vision to compete for HD's market although they did pic some up, so why the constant comparison to HD? I only ask because when I make a comparison I always target the "benchmark" for the rundown.
Here is an idea, maybe the dude who traded his Vision on the Ultra simply found the Ultra met his needs better. Or maybe he just grew to dislike the Visions look and wanted something more traditional. Or maybe he got sick of changing oil every 2500 miles.
The bottom line is if you like what you own/ride, what someone else rides or doesn't really shouldn't matter. The constant comparison with HD only makes the HD more attractive and serves to make folks believe you aren't happy with your own decision/bike. I know a number of folks who have off-loaded their Vision for something else. No big deal and they are happy with the choice they made. I'm surely not going to tell them what they should or shouldn't do with their own money, or what they should like. JMO

The Vision is a high performance motorcycle in most aspect and because of the syling, it is for people who are willing to take on the challenge. This bike is not for everyone, thank goodness! When I was sitting with my wife having an afternoon drink at Hill City, SD last month during Sturgis week we marveled at the number of Ultras. At one time there were 12 bikes lined up going through the stop sign in front of us. 10 of those bikes were Ultras. The person who traded off the Vision to be one of those 10 wanted that connection to the masses. He just wanted to be liked...by the crowd. At least I admire him for actually taking the chance on something different, but the pressure was too strong. The one good thing about it, a Vision is on the market at a lower price that someone who wanted one can get now. Hopefully, that new owner will enjoy the bike and sign on here to contribute.

I'm always a little wowed by the long-time H-D riders who switch to the Vision.  That is such a huge step on so many levels.  It's got to be like leaving a religion.

having come off an ultra i can say that FOR ME the long distance comfort is equal for both.(i'd actually give the edge to harley but that will get me crucified even though it is a monumental compliment to a first year bike which my vision is.) because of the wind issue i may go back. it has nothing to do with peer pressure or belt buckles. where the vision really really excels over the ultra is handling. that may be enough but it is small consolation when you get blown of the road or into the next lane.
i haven't given a thought to the dealer situation. when i lost the main and cam bearing near rapid city south dakota it was still a very long ride to the next harley dealer in sioux falls. this would have been covered by victory as my dealer threw in a 5 year waranty. harley made me pay for a new rebuilt engine despite this being a known issue with early evos, but i digress.
my sig o hates the seat and the buffeting. this is another reason to consider going back. she loved the princess seat on the ultra as did my daughter.
changing the oil every 2500 is not an issue. i started riding when we changed it every 500.
my dealer is great which is really why i haven't gone back. he is as easy to deal with as my harley dealer was and 40 minutes closer. i won't do business withthe 3 harley dealers nearer to me. i'd buy anything my vic dealer had to sell. so i am going to wait to see thenew line up in Jan. He won't have them in until then.
just my opinion. don't want to hear why i am wrong.

It's your experience exharleyrider, and not wrong in any way.

I'm curious. . .buffeting? You're having a problem with that and getting blown around?

I'm not saying you aren't, I'm just surprised since the wife and I haven't experienced this.

What model of Vision do you have?

Exharley, I almost traded mine for a HD a few months back when I was having issues without resolutions. I must say I don't have the blowing around issue BUT yu might have your dealer check your rear suspension bushings. Mine were replaced at around 5k, bad with excessive play. Haven't had any handling issues other than tire since.
SongFan, actually many folks like myself who have ridden for decades on HD's don't have this "supposed" affinity to the "lifestyle." I purchased my Vision after less than 9 months of purchasing my 07 Roadie. They had made some changes to the bike I simply couldn't live with and had actually planned on picking up another GW (owned two previously). The Vision provided the room of the GW and the characteristics of the HD I enjoyed, best of both worlds thing. I've owned 2 Roadies, a softail and a sporty and yet don't own a single HD tee or anything else, go figure. Of course I don't own anything that says honda and only one tee that says victory.
Don't get me wrong, there are those who live for the HD image, aka posers. But I believe you'll find for every poser there are at least 5 HD riders who couldn't care "what" someone else is riding so long as they ride.
I believe we do OURSELVES a dis-service when we play the innuendo game about another brand. If you want some proof hop on over to the HD forum where if you dare speak ill of HD you get banished. If you don't own a HD you don't ride. It would be a shame to become just another forum where the "brotherhood" of riders is being killed.

ps... I'm not trying to insult anyone. Yes I responded to a specific persons post, but these are general thoughts of mine.

Teach,

No offense taken on my part at all.  I know I push the edge of the snob envelope sometimes but it's mostly just in fun and I know who my audience is here.

I work with both extremes of H-D guys.  The guy who turned me on to the Vision is a long-time H-D owner and is a real rider/wrench.  He will ride with anybody and has nothing but repect for anyone willing to ride around on two wheels.  He loves my bike but is totally content with his Ultra and Road King.

The other extreme is a 100% poser who trailers his $40,000 bike to bike night behind his H-D edition pickup and probably wouldn't know where to find the spark plugs on his CVO.  He is totally self absorbed and will literally turn his back on any bike conversation that isn't about his brand.  Any venom that comes out against H-D from me is aimed at that guy and others like him.  He is a fantastic H-D customer but a total d-bag in every other regard.  He has totally bought into the cult and cannot imagine a single day of his life without it.  If he was an isolated case I would be less likely to vent about it here but he is not alone.  The only riders I have ever run across with that mentality are H-D riders and they are proud of it.  It is not only tolerated, but encouraged.  I understand and appreciate brand loyalty but there is a line of respect there that when it gets crossed, it really pisses me off.

There is a long list of Harley guys who are members of this forum and I respect every one of their opinions.  That started with Buckeye over two years ago.  This forum is so great because of the varied backgrounds of the riders.  It is probably the best mix of any forum in existence.  If I cross the line, call me out on it but I never mean it as dis to anyone here.

Peace.

Song, no buddy you didn't cross any lines and I wasn't offended. Just a general comment. I like the bantering here as it is pretty friendly.
I'd LIKE to see someone set up a ride so more of us could meet. I'd do it myself but time is an issue and we don't have the best roads around here. On another forum I frequent there are several regional rides each summer lasting around 3-4 days. One is in the Carolina's, another in the Northeast, another in Texas, etc.... Folks in each of the region get with a hotel or 2, and block so many rooms for a specific date and folks sign up. They then map out a few rides with sights and stops. I ride with these groups every year all over the USA and I've made some really close friends over the years. Would be nice to see that here.

Don't care what people ride, but if it is newer then my new bike pictured here. It ain't a real HD anyway. Real Harley's have cast iron cylinders

I thought I would put my 2 cent in. When I started shopping for a new motorcycle, It was when the Vision just came out. I test rode it and love it, but I never buy version 1.0. I let other people work out the bugs. So I bought a Harley-Davidson Road Glide and have put 37,000 miles on it till I crashed it in Death Valley last month. I really loved that bike and it did me well. I don't think Harley are a bad bike. I would have bought the Vision at that time if had been year 2. My previous bike was a 1999 Royal Star Venture.

I did test ride on Vision last week for the second time and put money down on a 2010 Blue Vision with ABS. Can't wait till it get here.

lonestarrider,

Let us know when it comes in. Did they give you a date of arrival?

How did the crash occur on the Road Glide? Was it do to tires/heat?

LSR, i'm glad you're well enough to type and to talk about getting back in the saddle soon. sorry to hear about your glide.

sound like you like riding a lot, and you won't be disappointed with the Vision. I'll be dialing in 52,000 before my 22 month anniversary week after next.

They told me they think maybe Oct. They will know the ETA in a couple weeks. I let you know.

Yes the rear tire blew and no I don't think it was hot. The tire was brand new, about a month old. At the time the temp was around 80 at 10:30 AM. You can read more about it here http://tinyurl.com/nnld7m
