My cousin bought a turkey fryer for this holiday season. I say peanut oil, but he thinks canola oil. Anyone have an opinion? Vegie oil? Corn oil?

Peanut is the best I've found. It has a higher flash point than veggie oil does and i have cooked 4 turkeys in one batch of oil.

Try Amsoil...... There are people on the site that sell it & I read a post that said at 900 degrees it will not change color

Man, do I love a good oil thread; its like an early Christmas present.

Technically I think all of these mentioned are veggie (plant) oils (with the exception of the R-P and Amsoil suggestions), as opposed to animal fats.

My pyrotechnically inclined neighbor swears by the peanut oil but warns that the bird must be fully thawed and dry before immersion in any hot oil.

You gotta love a product that comes with 1/3 page of assembly instructions, 1/3 page of warranty information, 1/3 page of recipes, and 5 pages of safety warnings! Makes me wish I had followed my daddy's advice and become a Lawyer.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Kind of like MUNG.... hang the 'oil thread perpetrators' upside down, beat them with a frozen turkey, and what comes out of their nose is 'Crack Oil' - otherwise known as Mung. Keep beating them until you have enough to immerse the now partially-frozen turkey.

Whale oil... Mmm. Delicious whale oil not only keeps that unfairly demonized industry alive, but it also makes a great lantern oil too! Hey, fishermen need money! Even if they do "fish" with harpoons and winches. Besides, every one is just mad because they can't make up a bigger fish story to tell their friends when a whale fisherman is in the crowd.

Ok.........maybe I hear more dirty jokes and tell more rude stories then some...........but really. Doesn't every red blooded straight (not gay) man know what Crack oil is? Think long and hard............and you will understand. Clue - This oil can not be bought but can be produced. It is not sold in stores and has absolutely nothing to do with frying a turkey or lubricating a motorcycle engine.
I will apologize in advance if this offends anyone...........but I think most of you will just giggle.
