I was at the dealer yesterday and picked up a filter. I have decided that I'm not ever going to pay another $13 for a run of the mill filter with their part number on it. Now, before someone goes crazy with the "I'm only going to buy a Victory filter because it was especially designed for my Freedom engine" spiel let's consider the facts.

1. Polaris is not in the business of making filters. Someone else makes them and puts the Polaris name on it.
2. There is nothing special about this filter as it relates to Victory's motorcycle engines because it is the same one they use on almost every 4 wheeler, Razor, and Ranger ranging from 500cc's to 800 cc's.

So here's my question. What are you using instead of the Polaris 2540086 filter? Where do you get it? And what does it cost?

I have been using the Purolater Pure One PL14610 but recently read that Purolator strongly suggest that you don't use this filter for motorcycle applications because some motorcycles may not have a strong enough oil pump to push it through the filter media. I don't know that this is the case but it gave me a reason to consider other options.

So, what are your thoughts?

I have hung around with TopFuel here in Memphis and he actually bought a couple of other brands and cut them all open to compare to the Victory filter.  He was genuinely surprised and was most impressed with the Victory filter.  (The cutaways are on display at our dealership.)

The dude is a Ferrari mechanic.  If he's impressed with the Victory filter, I'm not gonna waste my time looking for something else.

Good point SongFan, also, as we all know Vic can be a pain in the ass when it comes to needing something repaired/replaced/investigated etc etc. I think if it ever comes down to it and there is a problem with my bike, I dont want Victory using the excuse "you were not using our recommended filter, therefore we are under no obligation to help you" BS response. Because
lets face it, THEY WILL. just my 2 cents.

SongFan - Let's assume for a minute that the Victory oil filter is the best game in town. This being the case I'm sure that they didn't make it and whoever did probably sells it under another brand name which is readily available at your local Auto Parts store for less money. Anyone know who makes the Polaris 2540086 filter?

I think it is a Wix as well. Remember that Wix makes many grades of filters. I would not think the equal to the Polaris filter is the "el cheapo" Wix. It is probably the better or best filter that "what ever the company who makes the filter" makes.

Darned if I can find it now but I read a report online somewhere just this week about filters for Victorys. They cut a bunch open and measures surface area, filtration size/material, and check valve pressures. What I took away from it was that the Purolator Pure One #PL14610 had the most surface area and the check valve pressure matched. My biggest surprise was that they rated the Walmart ST6607 higher than the Amsoil EU013. If I can relocate the page I will post the link.

It doesn't matter who the vendor is for Victory. It's manufactured for Victory to their technical specifications.

Minus the Victory specifications: The same vendor that just built the branded factory approved oil filters for Victory is now free to upgrade or downgrade the filter materials they will market for their own house brands - and the third party aftermarket distributors they also supply. I've opened up several other "name brand" filters since those SongFan saw at our (terrific) local dealer.

The Victory brand oil filter still goes on my Vision.

SongFan, have you posted any pictures yet of your paint and chrome upgades??? (I don't drop in here much anymore...)

Big Vic, I have been using the Bosch 3323 filter which I pick up at Autozone for around $6 if I recall. I tried several and found I get the most mileage between changes with the Bosch filter. YES I realize that most folks think a filter is a filter but evidently that isn't the case and a filter can/will affect oil service life.
The only difference I could find between the Victory filter and the Bosch is the number of relief holes and the diameter of those holes. The Vic filter has fewer but they are larger, the bosch are smaller but more of them.
Since the dealer is a ride aways from me, and since the vic filters cost double plus the ride, and since I'm in autozone already getting my oil, it just makes sense to use this filter. Oh and the filter is painted black if it matters.

Mobil VTwin 20/50. Without turning this into an oil thread I run either the mobil or amsoil not because any one oil is better than another but basically it is what is easily to find.

I don't get to my dealer very often, as they are not real close to me. They are a good dealership-no complaints. I've been using Wix 51356 or NAPA Gold 1356 (same filter, different brand), that I pay $4.55 each for, for the past 9+ years on my Victorys. Actually, I use Wix filters on everything I own. The fleet maintenance shop for the trucking company that I drive for uses Wix filters on the 18 wheelers, and we go 25000 miles on an oil and filter change (synthetic oil). I change the oil and filter on my Victorys at 5000 miles (also synthetic oil, but not the same oil as the trucks).

They haven't blown up yet.

Yah, ME - Chris. For gosh sakes people - you paid $25,000 for a two wheel 'toy' - and gripe about the cost of a FILTER??? How much is YOUR time worth? It would cost me, I figure - $50 to run around looking for stuff when I would rather be doing just about ANYTHING else in that time. That's what DEALERS are for - let them do the work - and pay them enough to keep them doing it.....

+1 on that
We all worry about loosing a local dealer, support him all you can, he's probably only making a couple of bucks off the filter and oil he's selling you.

My experience with oil filters is that it does not pay to go cheap. I had two of them rust through and drain the oil out of the motor onto my driveway when I was leaving for work. They were two different brands on two different vehicles. One was a Purolator Pure One and the other a Motorcraft. Both were only about 3 months old. I was fortunate I was not 500 miles from home when it happened. No cheap filters for me anymore. I'm not saying that the Vic filter is the best. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. The Motorcraft that failed was the factory recommended part for that vehicle (It also happened to be the cheapest one on the shelf). I tend to use the filters with the black corrosion resistant coating anymore. I don't know if the filtering quality is as good, but they have eliminated the rust problem.

If anyone else has experienced this same rusting-filter problem I would like to hear your comments.

this is a interesting thread. I use Vic filters but i dont like the very short Oil Change Intervals, which makes the filter price a little more of a ouch. it would bt one thing if the OCI was 5000 or 7000 miles but at 2500 them filters can get changed pretty quick.. LOL i hope i dont get too far off topic but is it true that vic was working with a oil company to give us a oil that will extend our O.C.I.? one of my local vic dealers said he heard this..?

Just curious about this..

If the Polaris 2540086 is made to "Victory" specs, then why is the "Polaris" name on it? And how many Polaris products use this filter? Last time I checked, Victory was the only V-Twin engines that Polaris has. Not saying that it is a bad or inferior filter, but I can see Polaris taking bids from oil filter companies, and going that route to decide. Then telling Victory that they need to use this filter as well.

Just a thought.

Victory may not make the filters , but they are made to their specs . Would you really risk your warranty !!!! for the sake of a few dollars . We pay more than double for parts here in Australia , I wish I could get a Vic filter for $13 . The heart of longevity in a motor is clean oil and reg servicing . I am sure that I would not use a cheapo filter in my lawn mower , let alone my $35,500 AU Vision . Do what you got to do , but for me its a no brainer , Gen oem parts only. Victory spends a lot of money developing good engineering , for their bikes . I will leave it at that , GOOD LUCK !!

I have over 70,000 miles on the SC using the Purolator PL14610 and when they took it apart at 55,000 miles to fix the tranny, everything looked fine as far as normal wear goes. No build-ups/high wear anywhere. ET
