| Thanks for those. I have had both kinds of pipes. All I can say is the loud pipes wore me out. I enjoy my stereo more than the pleasures the loud pipes ever gave me. If you like loud pipes please do your riding group a favor by riding sweep. |

Don't pick on us old guys. I'm 65+ and i have loud plres on my Jackpot, but on the Vision i like to hear the radio. |

| Well, I am 57 and I will put the pipes on my '99 up against your pipes. I now like my pipes quiet so I can enjoy my Ipod on my Vision. Riders tell me loud pipes save lives but they say they don't hear them because they are behind them? How does that stop the person from pulling out in front of you? Most owners I know actually have loud pipes to get attention. Busy sidewalk and they crank the pipes.I figure the rest of the owners do it because they aren't legal. I have mine to see how they would sound and liked them. I have rode through places that have signs up that say NO LOUD Pipes and never been pulled over.
If you like the sound I guess it's cool but I haven't found any proof to back they save lives. I have plenty of proof a good horn saves lives but then again I don't know anyone riding around blowing their horn all the time. :P |

Meadow, Texas | I had loud pipes on my last bike, Bubs on a VTX, and after a year I switched back to stock. Liked to hear the stereo more than the roar. And I thought if I can hear them over my music then the poor guy behind me is being blasted to deaf. Like the stock on my Vision but really haven't heard louder ones on one, except in a file on-line, which doesn't really represent the sound. But so far like the stock sound.
And the only time I could concur that loud pipes save lives is around deer - they do seem to shy away from the roar but then again it could have been something else that scared them away.

Jasper, MO | I hit a full-grown St. Bernard dog with my Sport Cruiser a few years back. It has a D&D shorty on it and that sucker is LOUD. I was third in a line of four bikes on a two lane road with no shoulders and tall growth in the ditches. The two bikes in front of me were two Goldwings. Very quiet bikes. The bike behind me was a Yamaha Venture, also quiet. The damned dog was hiding in the weeds, waiting to chase vehicles. He let both the Goldwings go by and then jumped out directly in front of my VERY LOUD Sport Cruiser. There were cars in the oncoming lane, and I had no where to go. I didn't have time to do much but release the brakes and stand on the pegs before impact. The impact bent my front fender, bent my oil cooler, and rotated my right side highway peg back, but I didn't go down. I was lucky. I no longer believe loud pipes save lives.

i am 53 and liek em loud but not obnoxius. if i dont get rammy on the throttle i can keep my pipes quiet. if i pour it to her the things beller... |

Mt. Vernon, WASH. | After a career spent around pneumatic drills, rivet guns, yowling hydraulic pumps, and running airplane engines both piston and turbine as well as racing engines, I sort of like my quiet now. Loud pipes on a long ride wear you out and if you have a passenger, she gets cranky because she's right where the pipe ends and gets the complete 'benefits' of your engines continuous mechanical belching.
Sound is logarithmic by the power of 10X. a 1 Dba increase in sound level is ten times louder. I always looked @ 'those guys' with the shotgun pipes and having to constantly 'BLIP' the throttle as lacking in some basic element of Testosterone (goes along with having to wear every piece of clothing with a specific 'brand' . Mc Donnell Douglas put an APU (auxillary power unit) fire warning horn on the DC-10/MD-11 that could be heard over usual and very, very loud ramp noises, it's 180 Dba! I've people who've experienced one going off as 'being able to see the sound'. Protect your hearin' pans! wear ear protection, when AC/DC comes on only turn it up to "8".
In the picture above, be comfortable with the knowledge that long after that CAPRICE has rusted away, 'homey' will still be paying on those rims and tires. |

Shouldn't the driver already been aware of your exsitance due to your "loud" pipes......??? I have had both and enjoy the I-Pod and use my horn now. |

New Bohemia, Va | I quit reading all the "loud pipe save lives" threads and articles. I just figured that if folks rely on making a bunch of noise to keep them safe, we'd have no need to ride safe or take MSF courses, just uncap those pipes and run straight and we'd all be invincible. |

Denver, Iowa | I've got a guy at work with a 120" CID S&S Harley with an open pipe the size of a punkin' chucker...and not to mention, he's a ex-con that spent 7 years in a federal lock-up for drugs (but his wife has a heckuva job to buy him this bike!). Anyway, as an organizer of a charity ride for a local food bank, I figured I'd ask him to ride with us, just to hear him say he wasn't interested. Lo and behold, he accepted my invite. But how do I keep the peace with this obnoxious belching machine, and the Wingers and Voyagers? I didn't need to. This guy was so appreciative that he was asked to ride with us, he put on a different muffler with all the baffles intact, and rejetted his carbs a little leaner...just to show respect to fellow riders. He has a beatutiful bike, and made many friends on this 6 hour ride. By the end of the day, the whole gang knew his story, what he's done, where he's been...durn near the whole gammut. And the one guy he hit it off with best all day long-a 33 year vet of the police force! They had a blast! In fact, the cop bought him lunch, and my coworker was almost to tears because somebody showed him the respect back, that he'd been showing all day long.
My point being (if there was one...lol), his loud pipes probably wouldn't have saved his life that day, but his quieter pipes made him a dozen new friends. |

Duanesburg N.Y. | loud pipes save lives huh?Going to help get you noticed huh? I drive Fire Truck, Its a huge custom pumper/1500 gal tanker with more friggin lights. Ones that flash, ones that strobe, ones that go up and down, ones that go roundy round, and with a electronic siren and a massive bumper mounted mechanical Q siren and guess what? The dumb asses still pull out in front of me and I mean right they wait right until I get up on them and out they come. Try stopping 56,000 pounds in 30 feet!!!!
Maybe I can hack off the muffler so they can hear my 500 horse Detroit Diesel with the jake brake!!!
Yeah that will get me noticed, I feel so much safer now!!!! Thanks

Flowery Branch Ga | I like them a little louder than stock. On the Sportster I had I put Rush slip ons on it. On the Vision I will be doing the Thrush mufflers. I have ridden in groups that had some super loud pipes. To each there own. That is the great thing about this country, the right to choose.
