scotts valley, California | OK, just to get this out of the way, my Vision is an '08, so I reckon it is about three years old, just a pup. I, on the other hand, celebrated the ten year anniversary of my sixtieth birthday last January. Arthritis, bursitis, and multiple pains from old wounds are becoming a bit of a nuisance. Between the ears, I am still about thirty, probably because that area was pickled for about forty years during my drinking days. Once underway, there is no problem. But at a stop, or coming to a stop, particularly if there is a bit of a cross wind, my knees and legs are barely able to hold the Vision upright. This totally sucks. Can't afford a three wheeler either and don't think that medicare is going to pay for one. |

Central New York | Well I am only 63, but I still know what you are talking about. I will throw out two suggestions that may or may not be of interest.
1) Take full advantage of the Vision's huge floorboards, move around a lot.
2) invest a couple bucks in a visit to your local physical therapy place. Be out front and explain you problem, in depth. As long as your are specific enough, you would be surprised how effective a couple simple, CORRECT exercises can be.
3) Make sure you have some nice, tight lacing boots with a high traction sole, so that you don't need to divert any strength to maintain footing.
I have found these three things helpful to me, especially number 2. |

Mt. Vernon, WASH. | Do what I did, hit CRAIGSLIST and find an inversion table. I scored a $300.00 NORDICTRACK one for $85.00. When I feel like the world has been jumping on my shoulders I hit the table and just a few minutes of stretching out you back feels so much better! Plus as you loosen up, there are exercises you can do to limber up your spine. Feels great after a long ride too. |

Midlothian, Va. | I'm 66 and my biggest problem is the left knee when I need to back up. Not always but sometimes a problem. All other stuff is good and once in a while I'll pop a couple of Aleve after a long ride especially when it's cool to cold. |

New Bohemia, Va | at 52 and about 50lbs overweight I went back to running. Spending 20 years in the Army and 10 with 82d Abn has given me some gt sood landing gear. Staying as fit as possible is key to rider keeness and stability at a stop. |

Vernon, WASH. | I'm 63, way over weight and have ruined L-1 thru L-4 for over 40 years, a repaired ACL and arthritic knee so there's times that I put the gear down and I'm not 100% it'll stay and keep me from doing a 'Laugh-in' Tri Cycle @ the light, the Inversion table does help. So does a stash of 800 mg ADVILS when it's really too bad (that's very infrequently thank goodness) |

scotts valley, California | Thanks for the support, kids. The physical therapy idea sounds like it's worth looking into. If a guy finds the right therapist, I believe they can do a lot of good. I just haven't found the right one yet. Ibupropin (Advil) does nothing for me. When I was commercial fishing years ago, the doc had me on 2400mg/day for a couple of months.... nothing. Naproxen Sodium (Alieve) helps a bit. But, the truth is WD-40 works better than anything...no joke. There is something magic about it, either the spray on or the liquid seems to work miracles about 30% of the time.
This is an aside from the general theme of this thread, but when I was commercial fishing, I discovered that fish love WD-40, which is really strange considering all the old stories about fish avoiding anything that has the scent of any petroleum product on it. I had a tub by my gaff hatch with WD in it to soak my bait or hoochies or spoons or whatever I was running at the time every time I ran the gear. Production improved by 10-50%.
Any more tips about how to keep strength in my legs will be appreciated.

Gettysburg, 2008 Tour Premium | The suggestion of a sticky soles boots has worked for me. I bought a pair of swat boots last year (cop shoes . com) and the soles stick like glue. Now when I ussomething else I do not feel as secure. I pickled the gray matter myself for a few too many years. |

We're off on a 10 day ride to the Grand Canyon next week ! SouthWest Victory Ralley as well ....

| I will be 72 at the end of this year..My physical and mental health are good for now...Thanks to the good Lord...I had polio when I was 15 and have a few weaker muscles in my left arm than don't really bother my riding yet. I am only 5'9" and about 188lbs.and was concerned about handling such a heavy bike...But so far,so good.... Good boots with a grip type sole are a must and trying to remember to keep front wheel straight when stopping is very important and good advise from those who have similiar issues...Once rolling the Vision handles better than a long host of previous bikes I have had. Backing down my driveway is a little bit of a hassle, but I am getting better and trying to take it slowly until I am in the street....Good Luck...... |

Brighton, TN | Well, I'm 41, so I feel well seasoned. Yes, donetracey, did well, we are so proud, and apparently uses the right kind of oil, cause he can.
However, a good exercise regimen seems to remove or lessen most aches and pains, helps with stability, strength, and overall body conditioning. You'll be surprised by how well this works, I have seen it on more than one occassion in folks over 60.
Quick example, 60 yo male with rhuematoid arthritis in his hands, arthritis doctor informs him to stop doing anything with his hands that would aggravate the aforementioned ailment. The doc also had a hand gripping pressure tool that registers the amount of psi exerted by the hands, first time over 80 psi and following dr's orders saw the psi slowly decrease to almost under 40 psi. I find some lightweight handgrippers, the type that look like a spring and inverted V. Told him to give those a go, and slowly work up his way up to higher repetitions. After two months of using them, psi had climbed back close to 80, hands were feeling better, less pain, and general agility and dexterity had returned. Now why didn't the doc suggest that regimen instead of the do nothing. Makes you wonder. |

scotts valley, California | A recent email showed a survey that told how many doctors there are and how many accidental deaths they caused ever year. Then it told how many guns there are and how many accidental deaths per year they caused. Using this criteria, doctors are thousands times more dangerous than guns. Point being, doctors aren't always right. We just hope that sometimes they are. I kind of think that Dr. Pollolittle is on the right track; a little exercise and the right kind of oil -- take a couple of eighteen year olds and call me in the morning. |

Brighton, TN | Why thank you Dr. Blue Sky Guy, however, seeing as how you are apparently a more seasoned Dr. I believe your prescription is a far better one than I had previously prescribed. As always, willing to learn and update my formulary base.
However, I seem to find the older I get, I am unable to attract 20 yo's anymore (or ever did), how would one go about such things? Is there a script for that. |

scotts valley, California | Now, Dr. Pollolittle, you have just jumped the parameters of our previously proposed remedy for the reduction/elimination of "those pains and other shortcomings that hinder us from riding as we once did" from the use of 18 yo's to 20 yo's. Nonetheless, I believe the applications are almost identical. The "script" I have come up with after my countless years of research is basically to not try, in fact don't even want. You have probably noticed, as I have, that the periods in our lives when those desirables won't leave us alone are the periods when we are in a satisfying relationship and have no burning desire for the desirable. (whether the 'desirable' is 18 or 20). |

You telling me you can't find a 40ish woman that likes to ride ?

Carried mail in High School and spent 30 years pounding around on cement hangers and ramps as a mechanic and Inspector before 15 years as an Instructor. The ACL wreckage is what finally did me in, that started the arthritus |
