Okay fella's I'm new to Victory Bikes. My CC just has around 300 miles on it. Are the motors just this loud or do I have a issue. I hate to even ask this with 300 miles on it When the motor gets really hot and it's idling in neutral it sounds awful. When I pull in the clutch it stops? I only notice this noise at idle, again after it's good and hot. Doesn't do it when it's cold and first started up? Just curious, the oil is between the marks on the stick.
Speaking of that what oil and filter do you guy's use?

Thanks in advance,
Chuck

Does it sound like a rattling while in neutral? If so my Kingpin did that, never had any problems with that bike either.

mlockman, that's exactly what it sounds like! Only in neutral have I heard this noise. Victory is completely new to me too. So I'm not sure what they're supposed to sound like. If that's normal then I'm fine with it. Just wasnt sure since it doesn't do it cold? Thanks for the reply!

Don't panic, they smooth out considerably with time. Also some oils do tend to quiet the motor and tranny somewhat. Don't bother to ask about oils, just do a search. That topic has been beaten to death multiple times. As I've said in the past, these things are built like mack trucks and that's why the are a little noisy, but rock solid because of it.

Hoosiervic, that's what I wanna hear. The reason I asked about the oil is the manual called for semi synthetic 20-50 if I remember right? In my last bike I used the Rotella T-6 full synthetic. The bike seem to really like it and I really liked the price BTW...I know how the oil threads go...lol. That and the mention of running a car tire will keep a thread going for weeks...lol.
Let me ask this....where on the dipstick do these bikes seem to like the oil level? Right now, it's halfway between the full and low marks. On my last bike it was best to keep the oil level right under the full line. (sight glass) I know I can ask the dealer these questions. But I'd rather ask people that actually ride these bikes. And, not just get some generic answer. I'm sure Im hearing a lot if sounds because if the stock exhaust. (which I hate but it'll do for now)

Thanks for the reply. I've got about 200 more miles and it'll be time to change the oil. I would go ahead and add a little but not sure what's in it? I'm assuming it's what the manual calls for. But you know what they say about assume...lol.

Hi Chuck,    I bet you were thinking WTF is all that noise...lol!

I think what your hearing is the torque compensator.

From what I understand (never had one apart) the torque compensator is a gear type of connection between the crank and the clutch.

Meaning all gears and no chain in the primary. Which I think equals more noise.

Somebody is more then welcome to correct me or add to this

Also the amount of oil between the full and add mark is 1/2 quart. Best to keep the oil at the full mark.

Bosch 3323 oil filter.

This ain't a oil thread!!!!!! Yeah, I ask Tom what oil he used...I wanna know. I'm new to the Victory bikes. And I have questions, and I'd rather they be answered by the one's that actually RIDE and KNOW what make these bikes tick. You can take yours to the dealer if you want. I'm a hands on type myself.

Fill it to the line and don't worry. I use T6 is cool weather and 20-50 syn in hot weather. Don't worry about the change interval on long trips, the bike will be fine till you get home, but do check the level of course. I know it's hard to believe at first but these bikes were built first and foremost to ride. Let go and enjoy. ;-)

The torque compesator does make noise that people coming from other motorcycles aren't used to hearing. The only other brand bike I ever knew that had one was Vincent...................

Hell, when I bought my Vision towards end of last year....I thougth I was going crazy! Talk about loud until you hit 5th gear....then she purrrrrrs. I came off a Jackpot, so it wasn't a quite bike but the extra body work on the Vision and the openings between the bars and the console really seem to amplify the engine sounds. There are days I still think about it...but my '10 runs hard and I just keep pushing it and move on.

As we all know, it's not quiter than chain drive, and yeah we know a chain can break, but I've never seen one break in the primary of a motorcycle unless a loose bolt went through it, and don't think a loose bolt wouldn't break or stop the compensator also.................Not slammin just sayin.........

I just bought 2011 Vision a few days ago and I notice the same noise, you are speaking of. It wasn't there at first but now I have about 300 miles on it and when it is idling in nuetral I hear the gear noise. When I pull the clutch in it goes away. Transmission shifts smooth, so I will have the dealer take a listen at the 500 mile check, but it does give me some measure of peace to know you guys have heard a simuliar noise too.

So what is this torque compensator and why does it make noise, and what purpose does it survive for?

My 2011 vision is noisier in neutral than my 2008, but once moving the transmission is amazing compared to my 08. I did notice that so at with close to 1000 miles that the noise isn't as bad. Plus I'm using amsoil (shh ) that's a bad word! Lol

This is purely my take on a torque compensator based on a number of similar applications in other types of machines. Essentially when you think about it, a v-twin engine with a relatively long stroke such as the Vic Freedom engines, has a very pronounced pattern of "peaks and valleys" as the engine is running at a steady rpm. In other words each time a cylinder fires you have a spike in torque, and in between firings the torque drops off. With a direct drive like a motorcycle has, at low engines speeds such as when taking off or accelerating hard from lower rpms, as opposed to down shifting, that high/low oscillation of the torque output results in hundreds of impact shocks to the drive train that at the least makes for an unpleasant riding experience, and over the long haul could reduce the life of the trans etc.

In simpler terms it serves as a mechanical buffer or shock absorber between the output shaft of the engine and the rest of the drive line to reduce vibration and harshness.

Anybody else feel free to add to or rebut my explanation, feel free. Chris

I really don't know much about this , I know my buddy who races sports bikes talk about this . he claims it's there so you don't lock up your rear wheel when you down shift ????

Our XC still makes that same noise after 4000 miles. My wife, bless her heart, it's her theory that if you can hear that noise coming from the engine/gearbox, your radio isn't turned up loud enough.

She's a riot!

Amsoil and Wix for us.

Earplugs! Stops mechanical noise and improves radio clarity. And protects your hearing as a side benefit.
