Got the bike over at Ness to get the big honkers put on, they have a kit and its the mufflers, high flow air filter and new download, Eric said they dyno'ed this set up at the river run and it came in at 111 hp.. Not bad..Will post on the sound when I get it back.

Shane,

Laughlin had the Terresi DynoDrag.  The 111 HP and 11 second quarter mile numbers seem a bit optimistic.  They think the DynoDrag was not quite accurate.

FWIW, I have the same setup on my bike.  I have noticed that the Big Honker's don't seal well @ the gatlin tips.  Exhaust leaks out over the top of the chrome where it never did with the stock pipes.  I am thinking about making an inner shroud to keep this from happening.

I spoke with the Ness mechanic and he said the Big Honkers were inbetween the Level 1 and Level 2 (i.e. Level 1.5) in sound and performance.  They have a good sound to them, but not overly loud compared to other bikes.

They are loud enough to challenge/drown the stock speakers at highway speeds.  I picked up a set of J&M speakers at the Laughlin show and installed them.  The more efficient speakers made the stereo audible again after the new pipes.  The Mrs. also noted that she can hear the rear speakers clearly now where she was never able to hear the rear speakers clearly with the stock pipes and stock speakers.

I wanted a quiet long distance bike until I got rear-ended at a stop light.  I then understood why guys with loud pipes goose their engines at intersections.

HTH,

Tim

Take a listen to these.  They sound pretty close.

I was trading bikes with my friend.  When he had my bike on the highway, I could not notice a difference while following behind him until he got on the throttle.  I try not to get on the throttle in my neighborhood =).

shane 6727, how was the download done. Is it a factory download or a Ness thing?
Tim S, glad to hear things are OK.

don't know anything about the Big Honkers. Just trying to keep my post count going cjnoho, beat me to the punch.

Along the same lines. I test rode a Vision with the Stage 2 pipes on it. From behind it, it sounded tough, like a big V8 rumble, big throaty growl, but not very loud, until you rap it out. Going down the road, barely hear it. I could still hear the motor more than the pipes when I got into it. Sounds good, loud, and throaty when you get on it. Just not from the driver seat. I liked it. Couldn't really tell about the software upgrade as to the seat of the pants feel. 4th gear at 40 and roll the throttle and you feel like the bike is accelerating without you, either stock or with download. Dyno would tell better.

Not sure if it was a Ness download or stock to be honest but it makes a nice difference with the high flow air filter and honkers..Love the sound and jmo gives the bike the sound it should have had stock.. Nice deep rumble at idle and just the right amount of sound while at speed. The guys at Ness do some pretty trick stuff to the Vision, they told me they had victory reps come in to the shop and were surprised at the suff Ness was doing to the vision, everytime I go the shop they are doing something else to the vision its pretty cool..

Sounds like the Ness facility is a "playground for big kids"!! And what "kid" does not like to go to the playground and have some fun??? Victory should send their reps there more often, armed with cameras, and take copious notes. Some of what Ness does really doesn't trip my trigger, but you have to admit they are some pretty innovative folk, and with their shop, they turn many of our "Visions" into reality!!

Northwest of you

Not that I am immune to this condition, but, I have to laugh at trying to make any sense out of..............

"I got louder pipes, so, I had to get louder speakers, so I got louder pipes, so, I had to get louder speakers, so, I got louder pipes, so, I had to get louder speakers.............................."

But, the one that tops it all, is, but I can't hear them in the drivers seat..............well then, get louder pipes.......................

And just so I don't get accused of hypocrisy, I too got louder pipes on my Jackpot....... so I wear earplugs, if I go for a long ride..........

The Honker exhaust sounds bold at throttle while confortable at cruise. I would not put the tailgunner tip on with this exhaust system as they don't match up very well. There is exhaust leaks that discolor the tips. I will have mine modified and will let you know the results. The sound of this system is the best in my opinion.

If you use 3 small washers between the mounting and the tips they space enough to make a tighter fit to the heat shields. I installed the big honkers and that is what made the tips look finished and tight. No discoloration after riding.

Actually I did my own install with the original tips. The mounting is the same as the tailgunners though.

So this on day while in Vegas I saw this term "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas"

Oh wait, Ness has a shop on Boulder Hwy! Might be a great place to take a listen to them there.

I dont see a problem, since the cat. seems to be in the headpipe. The big problem in Ca is the certification process. Doesnt matter how clean it runs, if you dont pay the state you cant play in Ca. A quick ride to NV or AZ would solve that delema but Im not conviced that the fuel controlers that eliminate the O2 sensors are the way to go. The O2 sensor is the best tuning tool to come along since the dyno. Disabling them seems to be a step backwards. Its the one thing that can gaurantee proper air/fuel ratio at all times.

Bought my Honkers at the Ness (headquarters) store in Calif... asked them to install them, they said "we can't, it's illegal". !#@%!@

I installed 'em myself. They make a very deep sound, left the cats in, the sound level is just about right. Relatively quiet around town, I can set off car alarms on both sides of the street if I try. Strangely enough I like the cracking and popping sound on decel. Bike runs great, I may consider some sort of fuel management and intake changes.

Shane, I used 1 washer on each bolt. That worked out perfectly. I'll take some pix tomorrow and post.
Buddahead, I also pruchased my exhaust at Ness in Dublin, Ca.. They told me the same thing and then offered some options but I did my own anyway. They will help with any follow up though. When I was questioning them about the fuel-air mixture and if long term riding would be harmful without any remap or fuel-air control devices. They offered to check the spark plugs if I drive by and they could see if it appeared too rich or lean. No charge and while I waited. 10 minutes. The plugs looked normal and the new Big Shot devices will be available in 2 more weeks. They will do that install. They are saying about 2 hours. I have 1 on reserve when they arrive. The prototype on Cory Ness's Vision is working well and they say no popping on decel.

no, only 1 washer.. but I ran a bead of RTV between the tip and the shield to stop the blow-by.

Pics in my VR albums...
