I'm not starting anything about Harley davidson, I'm just pointing out the the Modern Harley Davidsons are built to look like the 1940's Harley Davidsons...Much like Polaris is doing with their Indian division. So, if a 2014 Harley is a "real" Harley, then I could argue a 2014 Indian is a "real" Indian.

To add to that HD point, Harley also changed hands when AMF almost closed the casket on the HD brand. The "brand" is the historical thread, past to current and beyond.

Here's a great review.  Check out the sub-article at the very bottom for H-D vs Indian real world costs.

Guess people were test riding Indians in St Paul Minnesota today. One of the demo trucks first stops after Sturgis. Hope all enjoyed. Should be in Charlotte NC next weekend ( 23rd & 24th )

Next big date on the calendar is Monday,  Aug 26th.  That's the day of the drawing for the indianmotorcycle.com website bike.  Winner will be notified by Aug 28th.

Not sure when the History Channel and other contest bikes get drawn.

Yes I guess you are right.? Then again buying a 2013 Harley cannot be called buying an historic or iconic motorcycle brand because H-D failed 50 years ago and American Machine and Foundry tried building these bikes from 1969-1981.? Remember this historic Harley:

The Aermacchi-built Harley-Davidsons became entirely two-stroke powered when the 250 cc two-stroke SS-250 replaced the four-stroke 350 cc Sprint in 1974

?

You'd be correct. Buying a 2013 Harley isnt "buying a historic Harley" - that would be "buying a new Harley." Buying a 1948 Harley WL would be "buying a historic Harley".

Hey I like the new Indians......I like Polaris/Victory and I think they will do right by the Indian name.

Im just saying a 2014 Indian Chief doesnt have a lick of history to it......want a "historical Indian" then buy a 1940 Indian Chief.

Just because it has some retro styling or vintage look/design cues to it doesnt make it have any history......its just new steel and rubber.

Although I can see your point, I'm not sure I can agree. I feel the new Indian has a rich history, with plenty of tradition. In the 'Indian Book', Polaris is just writing the next chapter.
Just like even though the NY Giants baseball team moved to San Francisco back in 1958, the history of the Giants goes back to the 1800s

Sure is funny how our sense of history and what counts as "real" gets defined.  AMF bought H-D in 1969.  In 1969 the Batwing Fairing came out as an option on the Electra Glide.  In 1971 it was standard equipment.  Here we are, 44 years later, and we all know what the Batwing Fairing has become.  AMF is considered dark years in H-D history but one of the most identifiable shapes in the world came from there.

Of the three new Indians, the Chieftan is by far the most historic because of the fairing and hardbags under the Indian name.  When there is no precedence and it is the first of anything, it is by definition historic.

Indian Motorcycles did not quit being historic in 1953 just because the company went under.  50 years from now, when Wikipedia lists "Indian Motorcycle", these will simply be know as the "Polaris" years.  It doesn't make them any less historic.

Would love to read a KevinX review from Daytona.

I'm interested in the exhaust note.  I had Stage 1 on my Vision and it was perfect for me.  Several of the magazine reviewers mentioned the exhaust note as being the best they had ever heard.  If the stock Indian exhaust is just as throaty as an '08 Vision with Stage 1, I'll stay stock.  I ordered Stage 1 on the new Indian just because I liked it on the Vision but I don't want to overpower the harmonically tuned sound that they worked so hard for on the 2014 Indians.

One little maintenance question:  How hard is it going to be to get to the headlight bulb?

It's got to be easier than our Visions..........Probably like a RoadGlide or ElectraGlide, about 45 minutes the first time.

AMF darned near ruined any chance for HD to ever recover from its disastrous state and prosper. I sure hope we are not in the middle of anything approaching the nastiness that we experienced way back then. HD has done very well since the workers bought them out from AMF. Today I own  a Victory bike, not an HD, but that does not mean that I don't know anything about their history.

I was at the Harley museum and factory last summer. Part of the tour was a history lesson. One thing that surprised me was that even after the company had been bought back from AMF they were in dire straights. The story that was told was that the company was within a week or so from closing the doors (1984) when they secured financing from some mega bank. Part of the deal was to go full speed ahead with the EVO engine and shutdown prototype work of the 2 ,4 and 6 cylinder Nova project......

Oh yeah I had the Vision parked right outside the front doors........
