Neither using an aftermarket oil or filter will void your warranty as long as it is a approved cross which all of the filters mentioned here are. Like oil, filters, tires all are personal preference items.... with that said I would recommend you run whatever you feel comfy with. Some folks feel for whatever reason factory is best, others its high end and others low end. I can't recall the last time I heard of a MC engine failure that was the result of oil, or filter used. Heard a lot of stories about clutches going due to use of the wrong oils or additives. So go with your gut...... ride safe...... T

And I thought the oil threads were long winded! As far as specs for a filter, most bike manufacturers just tell the filter makers what micron filter medium they "prefer", what bypass pressure is needed and how much flow rate they need. This is not rocket science guys! As long as the filter you use can meet the specs. that the manufacturer desires, it shouldn't matter to the dealer one bit other than he's not making the 30% markup. Most dealers are not making a whole lot on filters and oil. They would rather have your service. That's where they make their money besides sales.

Here's Wix's info on their filter for 100ci and 106ci Victory Freedom motors (part #51356):
http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/PartDetail.asp?Part=51356

As for Purolator, their website advises against using a auto oil filter on a motorcycle and points to their motorcycle filter chart which only lists Victory's 1507cc motor and the corresponding filter ML16817 (their ML16819 is discontinued).

Bosch does not list any motorcycle in their fitment charts but many Victory owners have used the Bosch 3323 for years without issues (including myself). Their website offers no technical specs on any of their filters.

Supertech has only anecdotal information on the web. Such as on calsci.com

Thanks for all the info guys...............I also enjoy reading the opinions. I will list a few of both.
Fact - I want to use parts at least as good as what Victory specifies but don't always like the mark-up or 150 mile round trip drive to the dealer. In my case I have 2 bikes that run about 10,000 miles a year (8 oil changes) so $6 a filter savings gives me another $48 to spend somewhere else.
Some people are of the opinion that oil and filters must say Polaris on them. I am not. I recognize that Victory builds bikes and that oil and filters are not their specialty. Other manufacturers know much more because that's "what they do" For this reason I tend to want to buy the best (or at least as good) as what Victory specifies. No reason to debate this because it seems everyone has their own opinion. Just remember that parts from Lloyd's, Cee Baily's, Cycle Ops, Corbin, Arlen Ness and so on are not "Genuine Victory Parts" but most would agree that they are an upgrade.
Strong Opinion - The WIX filter 51356 is the same as the Polaris 2540086 and is readily available at the local parts store for $6.99. I stopped shy of saying fact because I'm not qualified to test filter media. But I think most reasonable people comparing the 2 would see the exact same stampings, by-pass valve, gasket, filter color size and shape, swedges, markings and so on. Hell the box is even came from the same supplier. So with that said I'm moving over to the WIX filter.

I had the Napa Gold filter in. This last oil change I stopped in Advance Auto. They did not the the regular Bosch 3323 filter. All the had was the Bosch Distance Plus 3323. I didn't want to spend $13.49 for a filter since I change my oil about every five weeks, at least before global warming hit Florida. I bought it instead of driving around to get the cheaper filter. Top quality filter.

Hey folks, here's some really great research a fellow did on motorcycle oil filters. This guy is somewhat of a fanatic, but he has answered many of the unknowns we all have wondered about regarding the construction, quality and effectiveness of the different filter brands and how this relates to the price. The following links provide a great deal of info including price comparisons, cross reference charts, construction details and so on. They are worth studying a little.

The top link is a general lesson on the various materials and design concept of filters.

The middle link has a great cross reference chart at the bottom of the page for the filter size that fits the victory engines.

The bottom link shows the results of comparing the disassembled parts of various filters - what's really inside.

http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Filters.html#OilFilters

http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/FilterXRef.html

http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/FilterStudy.html

I like to make decisions based on good data rather than somebody's opinions. These links seem to contain clear and factual information. And provide many options for those of us trying to get a good product and save some cash at the same time.

By the way this web site has dozens of other articles listed in the left column that are of interest to motorcycle enthusiast.

Good luck and safe riding.

At this moment I can remember the oil filter maker, all I remember is the name starts with the letter P. Anyways on their website there is a warning to not use their car oil filters on your motorcycle because of the oil pressure rating other filter and the motorcycle. Not sure why they mention this...

For all you "noobies" way back when IowaVic and a couple others had owners send their used oil filters to them and they cut them apart. Some were real good some sucked. You might find the thread in the Archives of TheVMC.com
Wix makes the NAPA Gold filters. Wix "invented" the spin on filter.
Amsoil, K&N also make good filters.
Use good quality oil and filter and keep the oil changed as needed and you should be good.

Does anyone else remember the old oil filters that used a roll of toilet paper? O.O

Big Vic - 2010-02-07 8:50 AM

I was at the dealer yesterday and picked up a filter. I have decided that I'm not ever going to pay another $13 for a run of the mill filter with their part number on it. Now, before someone goes crazy with the "I'm only going to buy a Victory filter because it was especially designed for my Freedom engine" spiel let's consider the facts.

1. Polaris is not in the business of making filters. Someone else makes them and puts the Polaris name on it.
2. There is nothing special about this filter as it relates to Victory's motorcycle engines because it is the same one they use on almost every 4 wheeler, Razor, and Ranger ranging from 500cc's to 800 cc's.

So here's my question. What are you using instead of the Polaris 2540086 filter? Where do you get it? And what does it cost?

I have been using the Purolater Pure One PL14610 but recently read that Purolator strongly suggest that you don't use this filter for motorcycle applications because some motorcycles may not have a strong enough oil pump to push it through the filter media. I don't know that this is the case but it gave me a reason to consider other options.

So, what are your thoughts?

Big Vic, I think I have a solid answer to your questions and some very useful information for all Victory owners. This is how I made my discovery.

First let me preface by saying I have long heard that Wix brand filters are some of the best made, supposedly they invented the cartridge filter during WWII. Most heavy equipment filters are manufactured by Wix. Nuff said.

So I recently did an on line search for the applicable oil filter for the Vision on the Wix filter web site. They have it set up so you can pinpoint any vehicle and their filters that apply including part numbers etc. So they call out the Wix #51356 oil filter. I look up their local distributor in the Indianapolis area and lo and behold, OReilly Auto Parts carries them and there are a half dozen stores in my area. All sounds good at this point.

Now here is the best part, and all owners need to get this. While doing this search I also looked up the filters for the rest of our vehicles, one of them being an 04 Handa Civic. It was the same part number as the Vision. With a little additional research it became clear that all Vics from 05 and later use the same filter. That means that anywhere you are in the world you can get a filter that will fit your Victory. Just buy the filter that fits the Honda Civic. If Wixs, the world's largest filter manufacturer specs the same filter for both vehicles, than you can bet the filter requirements for the two vehicles are exactly the same.

Now here's what I discovered this evening while changing my oil using the Wix #51356 for the first time.
After removing my old filter I though I would start by visually comparing the Vic branded filter to the Wix to make sure it looked compatible. After spending about 15 minutes at it including measuring the threads with a thread gauge and other dimensions with a pair of dial calipers, I would bet money the Vic filter is manufactured by Wix. I could find absolutely no difference in the two filters. Every shape, crimp, material that I could see was exactly the same. Same number and size and shape of holes in the face, same external dims right down to within .005". Even the stamped plate the oil passes through had the number "20" stamped in the same location on both filters. Lastly the rubber gasket on both had a 1/8th inch wide yellow strip in the same location. Only difference was the name and number painted on the outside of the black painted casing.

So here's your answers Big Vic:
I'd say the Vic filter is manufactured by Wix fiter company, Wix #51356.
You can by them at many retailers across the country - look this up on the Wix web site.
I bought two at OReilly Auto Parts in Indianapolis for $6.99 each and they are always in stock. (That's because there are more Honda Civics in the US than most any other single model of car.)
That's almost two for the price of one Vic filter.
Lastly, if you are out on the road or just decide need to change your oil and filter at midnight, you could always resort to going to the local Walmart and pick up the best filter available that's specified for the Honda Civic and get the job done.

Now I must say I do believe there is a big difference in oil filters and so that last line is just for emergencies. The reason I chose the Wix brand is because I am convinced they make a top quality filter, probably second to none.

The main point I'm trying to make is that I'm very sure that for 7.00 bucks you can get a "Victory" filter with the real manufacturer's name on it and that it's probably sitting on a shelf in one of your local auto parts stores every day.

Look into it if you feel like it, I think this is some pretty good information for those trying to save a buck without cutting quality. And availability is almost universal throughout the U.S.

Ride safe and enjoy!

SuperTech ST7317 $2.87 at wal-mart, 10% discount, bring it to 2.58 before Tax. I've been using these for some time now with no issues. Also, I notice, maybe it is just me though, my oil is more translucent using the ST when I change it. All other filters it seems darker than when I use the ST, maybe, just maybe it is my thinking.

Also, I'm going to go for bust on this one, I'm changing my oil right before my cali trip, and riding 2,600 miles out, my in around and then back again, on the same oil. I'm changing my filter before I return, and adding new the oil that would be lost in the filter. If I don't feel comfortable while out in Cali about doing that, I'll change it out completely.

Think I'll stick to the Victory filter as long as engine is stock. not because I think the Victory filter is any better, but for extended warranty issues. Polaris seems pretty uptight compared to the HD extended warranty plan..........

My dealer puts the NAPA 1356 filter on my bike when I have it in for service. It IS the Victory filter and is made by WIX, WIX number is 51356. Hell, they even leave the NAPA decal on the filter.

I am using a Baldwin B-1402 costs around 7.50. When you purchase a filter whomever the manufacturer is you are paying for filter media (the insides of the filter) Baldwin is in the business of making filters for the heavy duty market. They do make the for the automotive side as well. They are made in Karney, Nebraska. I became assocaited with them by my father and being in the trucking industry. A competor who ran only Cat engines in his equipment was having some engine failure issues and he contact Shell Oil for their opinion in this area and they advise him to use Shell oil to start with and the Baldwin filters first and Wix second. Wix also makes filters for Napa stores and their private label. I hope this helps and wish you guys all eht best and ride safe and as often as you can.

I have always used Victory oil and filter on my 1999 with almost 99,000 miles on it. I don't care if it's a little more , If I'm choosing between giving my money to auto parts store , walmart, or my vic dealer, my money is going to vic every time.
