Last night when I opened my trunk, the light didn't come on. When I changed the switch to full time ON, the bulb worked fine. So the bulb isn't burned out. But the light goes out when I switch back to the normal "on when trunk is open" position! Bad switch???

Bad switch, very bad switch. Runs your battery down if left in the on position and the lid closed. I've always manually work it off and on when needed.

It's amazing how many people can't figure out why their battery goes dead in the car and tehy never check the trunk light switch bracket (usually cheap plastic). Yeah, the light is on when the trunk is opened but it stays on when the trunk is closed because the switch stays 'made'. Got a nagging battery issue? check the trunk/underhood light switches.
Basic detective work, superior results.

It's a 3 position switch on/off/plunger. Plunger being the little spring loaded switch in the trunk lid that turns the light off when you close the trunk. Could be a bad plunger or bad switch. First make sure you have it in the right position though and then check the plunger switch.

Calgary, AB,

Phantom, exactly where is this spring loaded switch.  I knew I had a light and 3 postiion switch, but it doesn't light in 2 of the positions. I thought there must be an off/auto/on type in the 3 postiions. Looked for a switch and have never found it. So I don't really know which of the two off (center and down I guess ) is the correct OFF manual position. Is the series in the order on/on when open lid/off, or on/off/on when open lid.  Its for this reason I'd like to find the spring loaded swith and disconnect it.

I always leave my switch off unless I actually need it!! I never trust it to turn itself off when the truck is closed.. I have read of too many dead batteries

It's a big plunger switch like the old school switches in cars on the trunk. It's on the lid, all black in between the latches that hold the lid closed. Mine works perfectly. With the switch in the right position just push the plunger down and the light will go out.
