Third-hand rumor:

My buddy called his dealer in Little Rock.  They were told that the red bikes are coming out first (all models) this week.  Blue next, then black.

My dealer told me I would be notified when my bike ships.  I'll post here as soon as I know.

Latest e-mail: (The cosmetic flaw was a chrome issue from one vendor, from what I've heard.)

Good afternoon,

As I obligated , this is your Friday update regarding your Indian Chief.

We had a great conference call this afternoon with Indian to share new data on the delivery times and ongoing Indian manufacturing picture. Each motorcycle is getting a complete valuation and review by an engineer, this is unprecedented and each bike is sure to have a detailed evaluation for you. Due to this process, delivery dates are painfully pushed back with each delay in the evaluation process. There has only been one cosmetic flaw found and all bikes have had this addressed, causing more time delays.

What we expect; we received three bikes this week. Two are for display purposes only and the other one is for the first day order. There is multiple Chiefs we ordered on day one and there is hundreds ordered from all the other dealers too. The bikes are starting to flow, but I expect the roll out to take some time and it will be deep into October until we have good flow. I will send you notice and call you the week I am notified that your bike is coming in.

Everyone is doing the best we can and quality is more important to all of us then a week or two of waiting. As the largest Indian Dealer, we are doing all we can to leverage, at the same time, we want to be fair. I will work hard to be patient and ask you to do the same. Look for more news next week…

One last thing; please send me your leather jacket size in Med, Large etc. Thanks!

Regards,

Mark Moses

Pre-orders come with a $500 leather jacket included (XXL please).  I'm not sure if it's one of the leather jackets shown in the apparel section of the Indian websites or if it is a limited edition jacket just for the pre-orders.  I also get a $1000 veterans discount.

Not too shabby.

Went to my dealers Indian demo days and rode the chieftain Motor is great with lots of power but it makes so much heat on your leg I do not see how anyone could stand to ride it very long. Transmission is great although when down shifting into second or first there is very little engine braking feels as though is is free wheeling. Dash in the sunlight is very hard to read. Controls which I though would be better since they are integrated into the pod instead of added on like the vision were an ergonomic nightmare I am six foot one with large hand an the control button for the windshield was almost impossible to reach without letting go of the grip and as for coverage it is not much than what you would get with a blade. The test ride deffinantly took the desire for the purchase of an Indian out of the picture.

Rode my Vision today, but I rode it yesterday also, and the day before too. Love it just as much as when I first rode one. A new legend is born.

everyday is a new day with the Vision! It never gets old! I will add to the controls comment above. I do not like the "unibutton" rubber button cluster concept at all. I wish it was hard buttons , seperate buttons , seperate functions. I thought the grips were too small, windshield top edge is right in my line of sight all the way daown. I wear a stacked heel boot so for me, the boards were too level, I wish they were more of an angle or I would have ot wear a boot with less heel. THose are my only negatives about the Chieftain, all would be easy resolutions except the uni-cluster . I Love the fairing, the instruments and the motor in any gear at any speed.

Charlotte newsletter posted today.  Scroll down to the serial # photo on their first delivery.  So much for a low #.  Makes me wonder where they all went.

#694 ?? That is a little surprising given that the Charlotte/ Gastonia/ Lowell Delership is probably the nicest and biggest Indian dealership in the country..............

I would still love to own an Indian, always loved the style. The reality is, if I wanted old school, I would sink a few dollars into a pre-1953 Indian. What I'm disappointed in is the fact they slam all this new stuff into the Indian, then make it the same old school ride. I love the leather seat, and know it has to be broken in, but my first impression was they built the bike and slapped a seat on it. Had Indian continued from 1953, I believe they would have made a bike like the Vision in 60's or 70s.

Here I've been trying to Indianize my Vision, but if I got a new Indian I would be trying to Visionize my Chief. Victory thinks about the rider and builds around them, but many has trouble with the looks. It seems that look takes the crown if you slap a little innovation with it, but do very little in the comfort area. Useless, usual rambling, but I find it rather amusing how much talk of Indian there is on Victory sites.

I'm not sure there would be much discussion at all on the Victory sites if it weren't for the Polaris tie-in.  (Certainly not 24,000 hits on one Vision-Rider thread.)  I think Victory guys are proud to have the Indian name in the same family, even if they never plan on owning one.

Certainly is a different vibe compared to the Vision experience.  I have already jumped in with both feet and bought several t-shirts (including a Burt Munro shirt flown in from New Zealand), a jacket, and a bunch of tin signs for the future mancave.  I have been interrupted four times while dining out and wearing one of the Indian shirts.  Twice was by total strangers and twice by guys that I haven't seen in over 20 years.  All four are Harley riders.  Every one of them wanted to know if I had an old Indian or a Gilroy/Kings Mountain, since there was no way I had a Polaris Indian yet.  I told them that the Polaris bike has been on order since July and am just waiting for the call.  They all had followed the Polaris reveal closely and are really excited to know (or meet) a guy who is getting one.  All four times, my food got cold (but so did theirs).

There is only one common denominator between a guy who buys a Vision and a guy who buys a new indian:  They want a bike that stands out from the herd.  The Vision does it with the futuristic look, the Chief Vintage does it with the nostalgic look.  They don't (and shouldn't) have anything in common when it comes to how they "feel".

If a Chieftain rode as nice or was as roomy as a Vision, I'd consider that a slap to the Vision.  Nothing should ride like a Vision!

Quote from varyder : "Had Indian continued from 1953, I believe they would have made a bike like the Vision in 60's or 70s."

I believe this too. In addition I think that if Indian had continuous production till present time AND proper funding they would have SOHC or DOHC watercooled engines maybe a V-4 ( inline frame mounted 4 cylinders are just too hard to package for styling and rider comfort ) If you ever rode a Indian 4 you know what I mean. When Indian and Harley were on level footing before WW II it seemed from what I read that Indian was the more look forward thinking of the two companies. After the war Indian was dead and just didn't know it, they struggled on till 1953. By this time Harley already had produced and disgarded The 61 and 74 inch Knuckleheads and the Pandead had been out 5 years. If Indian had the money they surely would not have still been producing side valve engines and would have built an OHV engine after WW II. AND I believe this would have led to more modern OHC engines as time went on. The decision to make the new engine for 2014 a pushrod 2 valve engine is beacause of it's "look" it's not a modern engine design, no far from it. But it fits the bill. I'm sure it feels like a stomper, but all big displacement narrow angle 2 valve V-twins with a almost 4 1/2" stroke perform like that on bottom end.
I don't know why I rambled on like this, I like the new Indian alot. But I would bet my last dollar if Indian had been building bikes for 111 years of continuous production this wouldn't be the 2014 version.
Yes as we all know I get carried away sometimes........

we know that the bottomline is the bottom line for the motor companies. But who brings in the bottomline but the consumer. There again, if your desire is for the "old school", which is really a dead shell of days gone by. long gone are carbureators and hard tails, but if that's what you're shooting for, then go for it. Because all this is subjective, I'll leave it at that.

my timing is always off when bikes go public. I couldn't afford a 99 when Victory was born, had to wait 4 years, I couldn't afford a Vision when they came out, had to wait 4 years. I can't afford an Indian and I want a NEW bike some day so I can say I put all these miles on such and such bike. Taking that into consideration, my plan is to save save save (position myself to buy a brand new bike)and buy the all new Indian 4 when they introduce that in a few years, yes pure speculation but I believe they will do it and I will be ready , Lord willing of course I want to be "that guy" that's food gets cold while I answers questions about my numbered Indian 4 , the only guy around with one, the guy that says yeah, I put all 200,000 miles on this bike Victory could come out with something that I buy to replace my worn Vision with , who knows, I just want to be "that guy" whatever I ride.

Well stated. Thank you.

I look at the new Indian and can afford one; and would like one. But with all of the modern technology infused into it.... it's really not an Indian.

It's a wannabe. A ghost of the previous example. It's hard to justify a purchase of one with a self exclaimed "I ride an Indian". Because....

....you really don't.
