Oh, you're right, it is a real Indian, it says so on the tank. It'll be interesting to see how the Polaris Indian will mature over the next few years.

To my point, I don't want a 2014 "1948" Indian Chief, I want a 2014 Indian Chief. I still feel that my Vision is closer to where Indian would have been if they never stopped production. Think about it, Harley is stuck in the 50s, right where Indian went under. I'm amused at best with all the "real" talk, but Victory is as real they come.

I'm pretty sure most people wanted a traditional "1948" styled Indian - based on the response from buyers. The popularity of the Chieftain is a bit of a surprise to me as my jury is still out on that fairing. But I think if Indian had come out with something very Vision-esque a lot of people would have complained that they were blurring the lines between Victory and Indian. I prefer to see them maintain two different styles.

The Chieftain was the most popular pre-order model at Charlotte.

Don't get me wrong. My only point is, Indian was very progressive, but didn't manage the business wisely that lead to their demise. I believe that had Indian had continued as a competitor from the original thinkers, they would have evolved to what may have been more what Victory has had in mind. I believe that HD would have followed suit, but they got stuck in the 50s where they lost their chief competitor (no pun). So we have today, picking up in the 50s where they left off. Of course this is all subjective and speculative. Who knows what would have happened if Indian continued, we may not have had the rice bikes as much, or we would have more American HD and Indian clones. My affinity toward the Indian is the forward thinking, rider focused and Art Deco design, but my goodness, isn't that Victory's thought in the Vision. Okay....You are free to agree or disagree we, just as I am free to share my opinion.

I'm not surprised. The feedback from a lot of people is very positive on the Chieftain. It's just not for me. I'm a Vintage guy!

I'm impressed with this venture for the new Indian.  Most Indian riders I've encounter are raw riders.  That is, no fairings, much less radios and all of the other fluff, a windshield at best.  So, for the modern day rider, this is almost a necessity due to the miles behind the bars, especially in colder temps.  There are days I want the vintage ride, thus, my choice would be a Chief Vintage, really, one of the next renditions of the new Indian that has a removable windshield.  I figure in two years, as I hope to roll 200,000 miles on the Vision, I'll be ready to go to raw riding on what the Indian may have on the floor.  I'm thinking they'll introduce at least two retro models each year, and at least a new into, like they did with the Chieftain

Translation: "modern day rider" = "Old Man"
We forget being young, when the wind and the cold didn't bother us. The only 'necessity' was gas and a bed roll.

The Vision is perfect for me today. Commute, weekend & day trips, long road trips. It does it all and does it well.

But I'm thinking that when I retire perhaps I will get a Class 'A' motorhome with a toy hauler. Then the Indian Chief Vintage would be perfect! Could drive to a destination, setup for a week or a month, then enjoy day trips all over, exploring the local roads, sights, cuisine, etc. Back to the motorhome at night for a martini, maybe a rest day, then do it all again. After exhausting an area (however long it took) we hop back in the Motorhome and move on to the next spot.

Just got this months issue of RoadRUNNER magazine and the Chieftain was voted their Motorcycle of the Year.  Not cruiser of the year or bagger of the year, Motorcycle of the Year.

Congrats Polaris!

Thanks Steve,

The only reason I'm calm is because of going through this with the Vision launch.  Charlotte Indian is totally overwhelmed at this point.  They hosted another Demo ride last week and that brings everything to a screeching halt.  They have to service all of the demo bikes during the visit and it just puts them under.

They have a mountain of accessories piled up at the dealership.  It takes 3-4 hours just to uncrate a bike and get it rigged and inspected for sale.  Add labor for accessories and it takes even longer (I have about $3K in add-ons).  I know they pre-sold over 70 bikes so you don't have to be a math genius to figure out how many hours they will spend just putting bikes together.  Polaris ships Victory and Indian bike together so add in the normal 2014 Victory line-up with the Indians and all of these sleepy hollow dealerships are smack dab down the tubes.

Ordering from one of the smaller dealerships was probably an advantage with the pre-orders.  My buddy will probably pick his up from Little Rock this week.  I put my deposit down on July 7th, he put his in on Aug 5th, after the reveal.  I have to drive 500 miles/12 hours, he gets to drive 150 miles/2.5 hours.  His bike is #963.  No telling what mine will be.  I'm not happy about how this is playing out but there's nothing I can do about it.

Bottom line is Charlotte is overwhelmed.  I have 9 days off starting next Tuesday.  If I don't get to pick it up within that window, it's going to turn into a real hassle.  We'll see.

Another side note: Every Indian is gone over by an engineer as it comes off the assembly line.  If there are any issues, that bike is set aside and the night shift fixes it.  My buddy went from #950 to #963 because #950 got flagged.

Always been a wise move to wait for the next year's model to roll off the line. Hopefully SongFan and the rest of the beta testers will have no issues with their bikes.

Am looking forward to seeing the modern day Indian roll through these parts soon.

Good luck with the new bikes fella's

willtill,  I've been called a lot of things but wise ain't one of them.  This Indian thing is pure emotion.

My wise move will be getting a low mileage Vision for a steal to go along with the Indian.  Thanks for the good wishes guys.

emotion as it should be. You have to take the first fruits if you want a numbered bike. I too can't wait for the Indian guys to get their bikes so we can hear a real world owner experience.

Friday update from Charlotte:

Good Friday,

Good news…

We have been receiving new Chiefs at a brisk pace this week. We are working overtime and even hired additional staff to get ready for the wave of Chiefs.

Each Chief takes about 4-5 man hours to de-crate and perform the Pre-delivery procedure. Many have accessories to be installed also. At the same time, we are running usual service work in the shop. What this means; we are running wide open. The bikes that were ordered first are receiving priority and we are taking them in that order to be fair.

Bikes - You will be contacted when your bike is here and on the lift to review acessories and Rose Mary will also contact you for insurance and finance information. Due to the volume, it will take as much as two weeks once the bike hits our door till we are ready to deliver.

Accessories – Many parts are shipping now. Stage I exhaust for example, is right on time. Some accessories like the Passenger Backrest are not due in till as late as December. We will install the acessories we have on hand right away. The back-ordered items will be held to install on the first service or just shipped to you (free shipping) as they arrive for your installation. We will work directly with you to get the best plan on a one to one basis.

If you have specific questions, please let us know. Please know that we are moving forward at a good clip and you will always have our personal attention. Thanks so much for your business and get ready, the Indians are coming…

Regards,

Mark Moses

Just got back from Daytona and met the couple who just bought a new black Chieftain, it's a numbered bike it is 666 of 1901. They put two gremlin bells on it and named it the beast. Gotta love a good sense of humor. I did find out that I'll have a numbered bike and will get it Wednesday next week. Oh boy! I'm bouncing off the walls waiting for it. In my 60's and feel like a kid at Christmas.

Hinshaws Motorcycle Store in Auburn, Wa. is going to be selling Indians alongside the Vics in a new building separate from the Hondas and other Japanese bikes.
I'm looking forward to see how it will work, and what the clientele will be like.
