If you were at redline, in 6th gear, what would the speed be?

I'll have to say, you could probably prove 180mph, since that what the speed-o goes to?

180 on the speedo is what prompted me to ask this question but it is just a random number. (Although an impressive one.) Redline in 6th gear is mathematical based on gearing & rpms and some engineer out there knows what it is.

I think 180 represents KPH. MPH ends at 120 I think?

More likely, the speedo was designed for use in all regions. The mph is lit up on my speedo which is a US bike, in a country that is metric the km/h would be lit up and of course the speedo would be calibrated metric. BTW 180km/h = 112mph.

In 6th gear, at 80mph, my tach reads spot on at 3,000rpm. A 500rpm drop or climb results in a change of about 14mph. That means and additonal 28mph per 1,000rpm. At 5,000rpm, you should be at 136mph.

I have yet to test true top speed, but she does get up to 115mph in a hurry with no problems whatsoever.

Im surprised the redline is only 5,000 rpm. With the 4 valve head that motor should be able to rev way beyond that. The key to top speed is whether you have enough power to reach redline in 6th gear. My harleys max rpm in 5th is 4500rpm it just wont rev beyond that. Final drive ratio is a factor also. If the wheel turns once every 3rpm of the motor(3 to 1 ratio) the rear wheel turn 1/3 revolution for each engine revolution. Now you need the circumfrence of the tire in feet. Divide that by 3 (1/3) multiply that by 5000(rpm) and divide that number by 5280 (ft per mile). Theoretical top speed. Now add in weight, drag and wind resistance and that number goes down.

The easier (and more fun) way is to find an isolated highway. Put'er in 6th gear and twist the throttle. Not that I would ever break the speed limit or suggest others do. Sure would eliminate a lot of variables. Theoreticaly speeking, of course.

I've heard that a Victory on a dyno can register between 140-150mph. Of course, no wind resistance. I've also heard that the engine on the Vision may have some kind of limiter on it because the Dunlop Elite 3 radials are only rated to 130. Redline on the tach could be way below what the engine is actually capable of.

I'll bet Lloyd can set us straight.

i don't know if i can handle over 120. thats moving! i think cjnoho might be able to pull that off on the I-5. most people go near 90mph on that raceway anyhow. how you holding up with the fires over there?

Its the only way to get away from most of them. Try and slow down to let them pass and they slow down too. Twisting the throttle is the only way.

Made it through the fires. Got close to where my daughter is. Bunch of smoke and ashes but shes okay. Two of my friends in the area have 7-8 lanes of highway between them and the fires. All are okay. Im too deep in the city, too much concrete aroun me. Wife says I havent been okay in years. No fire though.

The 106 cu in motor in the Vision has a large bore and long stroke at ~ 4" ea. This is a lot of mass in movement when you start adding rpm, reliability of the motor has a lot to do with ft/second the piston is traveling. A motor with more cylinders would be able to rev higher due to a shorter stroke on the piston. The Honda G/W motor has more cu. in. but can rev higher due to the short stroke of only ~ 3". Think of the Victory motor like a high performance big block, if this was a V-8 it would have 424 cu. in. With it's large mass, it produces a lot of torque at very low rpm, which is real world power I've had my Kingpin Deluxe to 115 mph several times and was still pulling when I backed off. I'm sure the Vision will do at least the same.

cjnoho...glad you and the family is ok. we are getting all the smoke up in the high desert now. visability is down to 4 miles on the deck, and 6 miles air born. two years ago big bear and our valley went up. sure does make for an eerie morning ride to work! it was really weird this morning..

Buckeye, hope the smoke clears before you take the Vision on it's first + century ride. I normally back off on my Kingpin at 115 due to the wind effects of the fork mounted windshield on the bikes handling. With the frame mounted faring on the Vision, that should not be much of an issue. Plus @ 115 for me that was plenty fast.

i'm wondering how the vision will hold the road at those speeds. i'm thinking i will barely notice im going over 100mph. except for the bug guts....did 110 on the e-glide on a cross country trip. was a bit shaky, but felt just like i was going 110mph.

At 105 tonight, she was stable as ever. It was smoother than my Jackpot was at any speed...

And thats bone stock. Imagine what a little computer tweeking will do. Although 115 would be enough for me.

I can't believe no one has discovered the top end of the Vision yet. On my test ride I was able to hang back of the pack far enough to nail the bike and get it up to 115 but I had to shut it down so I wouldn't run over the rider ahead. At 115 the Vision seemed to still have a lot more left. When I get my Vision I will find the top end within a few days.

If you are thinking you have to wait till you have babied the bike through the break-in period I suggest you read this article. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm.

Come on Vision riders open her up and see what it will do. I have had a few bikes over 130 and a couple over 150 and it is a blast.

Oh man,

I was hoping we wouldn't open this can of worms but we might as well start a whole new thread on break-in procedures. Let's go ahead and open one up for oil also.

Well, we have to get one first! Once I get mine I'll run it up after break in and let you know. There are a lot of back roads here to test on.

I've had mine to 115 (two up) pretty easily and as has been said, she handled very well!!! When I backed off, it was still pulling. I'll get there soon enough and when I do I'll let everyone know.

We were coming back from New Mexico, with 2 up I just rolled the throttle on in 6th. I started at about 70 MPH I shut it off right before it reached 125 MPH. I'm sure with a set of pipes and the air filter it might hit 135. At 120 it was really smooth.
