| I brought my bike to the local stealership (Polaris of Baton Rouge) and I am so worked up that the BMW K1600GTL is starting to look awfully good, even though I like my Victory and have put a lot of work into getting the bike like I want it. I brought my bike in because the two halogen headlights were not working. I know the front end needs to be removed to get to the headlights, but they quoted me a price of $640 to replace a couple of stupid headlights and that the bulb costs $309.00 for parts. I told him that the HID headlight works and that the bulbs were probably H4 or H7 car headlights and should list for about $12.00-$24.00 apiece. Labor is not a problem, I understand. I should have known because a lot of the techs in this dealership have quit and everybody is new. The owner of this POS dealership is a guy named Snyder (I've met him a few times) and he owns dealerships located in both Shreveport and Baton Rouge with over half the floor space in the Baton Rouge dedicated to Polaris Off-Road vehicles, and that 3 wheeled car called the Slingshot. Stay away at all costs. I guess I'll try the motorcycle only dealership in St. Rose, LA and if that fails, you'll find a highly modified (suspension, cams, seat) Victory Vision on the market for a reasonable price and I'll be talking to the guys at BMW of Baton Rouge to help me find either a R1200RT with a top box or that K1600GTL. I already own a K1300S and know all of the guys at the BMW dealership and they treat their customers right in my opinion and have reasonable labor costs. Most of the employees have been there for years and really ride bikes instead of driving a cage. |

Albuquerque, NM | There is a good thread on the vog.net forum if you feel up to the challenge. I used it to change mine earlier this week. Hardest part was unpluging the sockets from the bulbs. I used a metal door panel removal tool to hold the bulb in place while I wiggled the connector off.

I know how to get them out but I remove the whole headlight assembly and it takes me around 1 hr and 45 mins from start to finish but I do take breaks! |

the hardest part for me is not unplugging the light but getting the spring clip back in place, blind. |

| auto parts stores sell H-4 for $15 bucks.
Remove air filter. Adjust headlight all the way up. Now you should have enough room for your hand. Mirror can help out

Mechanicsville, VA United States | I tried turning the headlight adjustment knob all the up and still couldn't get my big meat hooks up in that small area, also removed the air filter too...
I think the main reason wasn't so much I couldn't fit my hands up in there but after I got up in there I couldn't imagine which way I needed to undo the spring loaded wire that holds the bulbs in place and my hands got tried and started cramping on me so I just did the removal of the headlight but doing so I found a short cut to getting it out without damage to the bike or headlight assembly. |

if you google replace headlight you'll come to answer I believe it is. They say to pull the gauge housing. well that's not the answer |

Same stealer had a salesperson that wanted to sell me an Indian and she told me they'd give me a great deal and that I would only have to pay list price and not a premium like the Harley dealership. Obviously she hasn't been inside the Harley dealership because they offer discounts. I'd never buy a Harley because I have an aversion to paying $20,000+ for a bike with bad brakes, poor handling and no acceleration, but I've been there and seen that they offer discounts on their iron. |

Jasper, MO | You need a new dealer. Mine charges me 1/2 hour labor to change the headlight bulb, and they do it by just pulling out the air filter and reaching in. It's worth it to me because I'm not that limber anymore.

Mechanicsville, VA United States | Here's how I replaced my headlight bulbs: Remove the Front "V" panel, remove the belly pan, remove the 4 bolts that hold the Tip overs to the sub-frame but don't remove them from the side plastic panels, remove the front grill, remove the 4 outward 6mm allen bolts that hold the signals in place, remove the (4) 10 mm hex head bolts that hold the headlight assembly(2 at the top and 2 at the bottom), remove the (2) 4mm screws that hold the front plastic panels around the signal lights........now pull on both sides (gently) of the headlight assembly (plastic panels around the signals) pulling on the headlight assembly (be sure to cover the front fender with something)......the headlight assembly has pins that go in place with the signal panels so be careful and go slow and it will come apart, now just unplug the wires to the headlight assembly and it's yours! I've done this three times with no damage to anything and it didn't take about around 45 mins. Change your bulbs and reverse this procedure to install headlight assembly.

New Bohemia, VA | Smaller hands are a plus. I'm thankful it's been over two years since I had to last change a bulb. That was after a spell of changing one about every 3 months, what an ordeal. I just remove the air filter, adjust headlight up, pull boot, unclip, change bulb, and reverse. The first time I had to remove the entire assembly only to fine the clip was incorrectly installed making it impossible to simply unclip. |
