After 65K mostly trouble-free miles on my 2008 Victory Vision Tour (which I have LOVED and have done all scheduled service on with licensed dealers) I had a major catastrophic drive failure (possibly from a misadjusted belt by my previous dealer in Orange County). After taking it into 3 different LA-area dealers for estimates on repairs, I get the feeling they really don't want to do the work; the first two said to just write off the bike completely) and the only one who finally got back to me with a quote wants nearly $7000 to completely rebuild the transmission! Can anyone give me a reality check on this?

Here's the repair order summary with full PDFs attached and photos of damage:

So excuse my lack of knowledge about this but would a complete engine like this fix my problem? How hard is that kind of a transplant? Anyone know of a mechanic in Los Angeles who you'd trust to do this kind of work?

And what years engines would be compatible with my 2008? Could I use a newer model?

Another engine means you would No longer have this problem .. because you would no longer have the engine that needs $7000 to repair it . I bought a used engine recent and my engine I replaced was no where near as damaged as yours.. so why did I do it ? Cost effectiveness.. it was going to cost me more to repair a engine with 10 times the miles , than it was to purchase a used with where all the components had 10 times less mileage ...

Btw .. not only is a replacement used engine cheaper ..but it is also faster to get you back on the road .. I can't even imagine how many months it would take a shop to do this work .. mostly due to getting parts ...and the labor would be most then the replacement engine..

$7000 would be a non starter for me. Depending on how bad the shaft threads are, and IF it can be made safe to ride, I would consider using a thread file on the shaft. Replace the pulley, nut, and locking plate and probably the bearing with new parts. Then check it often. If a new nut doesn't torque down then there's no point in this. If it does torque down I could still be wrong.
I am wondering was the nut tightened against the face of the lock plate? Or just not torqued?

Like BillyJoe, I would try to dress those threads up with a thread file and then chase them with a die. If successful, then I would replace the sprocket if needed, the nut, and the lockplate. If the seal is still good and holding oil, I doubt if there is any internal engine damage and engine replacement would not be necessary.

I had this same thing happen on my 2000 Sport Cruiser when it was fairly new. This was a common problem on the early bikes, some of which did not get torqued properly and had loctite applied at the factory as they should have been. I did just what I just suggested, restored the threads and put on a new sprocket and related items. Victory supplied the new parts under warranty at that time. I'm still riding that same bike today.

If your engine is indeed damaged internally, a good used engine would be the way to go. I would try restoring the threads on that shaft first if it were mine.

I vote for another engine. I bought one for a friend of mine a couple years ago for under $1,000.

Thanks for all the recommendations. Sounds like a replacement engine is the way to go if I can find a shop to do the transplant.

Sorry if my question sounded stupid. The reason I asked whether a replacement engine would fix my problem was that I didn't know if any/some/most of the likely damaged parts were on the drive train (if that's the right term) past the parts that would be included with the replacement engine. Other than the belt (which I'll have to replace because the shop cut it off to make their diagnosis) there are no mechanical linkages or parts that would be damaged between the drive pulley that will come attached to the engine and the rear wheel?

Also, are there any questions I need to ask about the replacement engine before buying it? I guess if it runs well and has a reasonable number of miles on it? Do I need a compression test or anything else diagnostic?

Finally, how skilled does the mechanic have to be (especially with the Victory Vision specifically) to for me to end up with a reasonably reliable bike at the end of all this? Would a reasonably skilled dealer be able to make any necessary adjustments once the mechanic has got the engine in place?

Sorry if this seems like I'm being paranoid but in recent years the bike was maintained by a dealer whose Vic-skilled mechanic was only busy enough to justify being in the shop one day every two weeks; I suspect (because one Vic dealer suggested it) that may be why the bike failed within a couple of months of the last major service I had done; he thought the work done for the 50K service interval (done around 60K) should have caught whatever was out of spec.

engine and tranny are unit construction. there are good engines pulled off wrecked Victorys on ebay. I had a countershaft bearing fail on my 08 Vision and the tech told me it would be cheaper to buy a salvage engine than split the case and repair the original engine. So, that's what I did. I ride it almost everyday. Got 14K on this 2nd engine, it's off an 09 Ness Vision because it has the diamond cut fins. A bonus prize in the cracker Jacks box is that it came with a Lloyds timing wheel that the previous owner installed
. My tech was independent and doesn't have computer or dyno to tune it properly so, I still need to take it to Kevin Cross in Florida for a tune to get the engine and fuel controller / timing wheel dialed in. Also going to install a 1/4 turn throttle ring. It runs only adequately , once dyno tuned , it will be what it should be. I only know what it should run like because i have an 09 anniversary with identical mods that runs like a scalded dog!

before you give up on what you have. Take the nut and to some machine shops or even stores that sell nuts.
Take the nut and go see what you can find. Maybe there is a lazier shop that could do something

One last question: my local Vic shop is quoting me 20 hours labor on the engine swap. Does that seem reasonable?
