Will am XM receiver work from the standard Auxiliary cable connection? If so, can you switch channels with the controls.

If you are talking about a portable unit that you can switch from car to car then the short answer is no. Plugging anything into just the aux cable will only give you volume control. No song info on the head unit nor the ability to change channels will be available. A factory XM unit which also requires a cable from the head unit to the xm unit, will allow full integration with the head unit and controls.

i have a garmin gps unit with xmradio
i just pllug it into the audio cable in the grove compartmen
i dont know about otger units
