I know oil is ONE of the farorite topics on the forum, but I noticed my oil temperature gauge at 300 degs. for about 35 minutes while stuck in traffic before finally moving along steady. i noticed valve clatter when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. What does this high temperature do to the oil protecting the Vic's motor? Does it need to be changed? Just changed the oil 500 miles ago.

That's HOT!!! I would hope that maybe your gauge is a little strong on its reading. I have been stuck in traffic with dip stick temp reaching 240 with air temp at 85. 300 dipstick temp for 35 mins means head temps much higher, if you are reading head temp that's not so bad. That's definately in should not go there land for dip stick temp. Oil break down, probbably not with syn oil. If you got a noise you haven't had before change oil. It's the least its going to cost. You can get an oil sample kit and analize the oil for peace of mind (aprox. $25). Good Luck

What are you using for oil? Mines got up to 260 degrees at its highest and I use Amsoil.

Just for sheets & giggles and maybe some piece of mind, take a pan, boil some water, stick the tip or so of the dipstick in, and see how close it reads to 212*. Water that in not under pressure boils at that temp.
Oh and make sure you use one of the wife's old pans or do it when she is out shopping. Don't ask how I know this!

Any MC oil should be good for short period of temps up to around 320. Anything over 320 you need to pull off and let her cool down. I think I'd be a bit more concerned as to why the bike temps got up that high. 260-280 is pretty hot, but 300 is hot enough to steam skin off your crotch, so my guess is your thermometer is bad.

I was actually stuck for an hour it was after about 25 mins or so that I noticed the temp gauge at 300 degs. outside temp about 55 degs. and it was move a few feet sit a few mins., etc;. The beginning of the thread was after I got moving. Traffic moved about 35 to 45 mph after 6-8 mins the temp dropped to 250 range then when I got on the hgwy within 5-6 mins it was running 200 deg. I did a Vic oil change just 500 miles ago. I picked up a Vic oil kit for $62.99 to change oil this weekend. Peace of mind. Good company is hard to find , good riding friends harder.
