, IA | so i changed my bikes oil out for winter storage so here my ??? whats the shelf life of sync oil or vic oil my dealers 156 miles one way and really would prefer to buy in quanity rather than making the trip ever few months and is it?? ok to store oil in a unheaed garage for winter or do i need to keep it in the house |

If Synthetic Oil has a shelf life, I am totally sure you would use a couple cases way before it expired. In a sealed container, you should be good-to-go for quite a while.
The one thing all should be aware of in storing "especially in an unheated environment" will be condensation.
Oil and water do not mix, but metal does sweat. If your environment fluxuates in temperature from day to night (which I think in most cases would be inevitable) you can expect moisture to accumulate in your engine. I would not think this is an issue in a sealed plastic oil container, but I am not a scientist, so others may know better?
You can not avoid this condensation from happening, but be aware the proper way to get rid of the water. The bikes oil temperature must reach at least 170-180 degress in order for the water to be evaporated. That means you will need to ride the bike for at least 15 minutes once you get the bike out to run. Folks who like to start the bike in the driveway and let it idle for 10 minutes.......Thats a No No!
I have read here on the forum that several guys are changing there oil BEFORE they store there bikes for the winter. I would like to hear why? Maybe they know something I do not? I am a student and would love to hear about the reasons. Seems to me you would want to wait until the spring to put the fresh oil in the engine?

Storing a bike with used oil is not a good idea. Water vapor and condensation in your crankcase oil will combine at room temperature with sulpher to form sulphuric acid. This is a bad thing. The sulpher mostly gets into the oil as combustion by-products, so if the oil is new, this is not a problem.
Synthetic oils have a big advantage for winter storage. The increased film strength of synthetic oils means it takes considerably longer for the oil to all drain down to the oil pan, so when you finally do start your engine there's still a little oil on all the bearings. Also, synthetics offer superior protection for cold weather starts. If you drained out normal oil and replaced it with synthetic, you have to start the motor and run it for a minute to get the synthetic oil pumped all throughout the motor.

Does Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil (in an unopened quart) have any sort of shelf life, like conventional motor oil?

Answer:
ExxonMobil recommends a five year maximum shelf-life for engine oils, including Mobil 1.
