We lost a great friend yesterday. He was travelling with his girlfriend outside of Reno, lost it on a corner and broke his neck. Died instantly. What pisses me off is that if he had good tires on his bike, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

No condolences required, just please check your tires.

Sorry for your loss Ken & Pen. Your right about the tires though. I was having some handling issues so had our friends at Peak put on new skins yesterday. All good again.. Tom

kenandpen,

Sorry for your loss. My tires have 3500 miles on them and are in great shape.

Besides to I am driving the Trailblazer today since I have to pick up my Father from dialysis after work.

Take Care

Always sorry to hear of a loss.
Can you elaborate on the tires? Wore out? Under inflated? Blown out? Damaged?

Hi VaParadox

Thanks for asking. His girlfriend was riding her own bike following him. Details are still coming in. They were half way between Reno and Vegas. Hwy 6(?) I think.

As for the tires, 1st indication is worn out. He was no weekend rider. He had 10's of thousands of miles on different bikes. It was nothing for him to hop on the bike Monday morning in Toronto and end up in Tennessee 3 days later, never touching a freeway.

All we can say now is that he died doing what he loved. If we could all be so lucky?

Sorry for your loss.............
As tires go I check pressures and inspect them every 2 weeks, more often when traveling. It's impossible to accidentally ride on worn out tires if you do this. I have a brother and a good friend that lost rear tires while on the interstate, both caused by under inflation. Bike tires leak air, you need to check them often. I installed a tire pressure monitoring system a few months back for extra piece of mind. I never, repeat never run tires past the wear bars. Those claiming 15,000 miles on a rear do something dramatically different than what I do to get that many miles safely out of them. Tires are just the wrong place to try to save a buck.

Ken, so sorry to hear of your loss. Prayers for the family and the girlfriend.

Thank you for the reminder to check and to recheck to stay on the safe side, but I'm also curious of your assessment of what caused the accident. Was the road surface wet, or tainted with something that made it lose traction because of bad tires? Having been in the military as a leader, we've had to ask critical questions to find not only the root cause, but extenuating circumstances. Bad tires alone on a good surface would not necessary cause one to go down unless it was too fast for conditions, fatigue, with slow reaction, and so on. I wouldn't have asked this question, but your original post makes me want to know more. We're all friends and sharing all we know will help us all stay alive a little longer.
