Jacksonville, Florida | I already referenced this elsewhere, but thought it should be here in Tech. Let me say I am not the originator of this idea. I first read Fargo's post about cherry bombs. Just so happened I found Thrush mufflers at Advance Auto for $19.99 ea. 2 1/4 in and out, 31" overall length, we need around 33-35".
The reason I am posting here, is for record, and this weekend I modified it, so I thought I would share what I think are the improvements that make it a workable solution. I originally installed the 31" Thrush Glasspacks, part no. 24205, which are as I said $19.99 at Advance Auto. I originally tried to use the stock tips from the stock mufflers, but the sound wasn't quite there for me.
I ended up buying a pair of stainless steel exhaust resonator tips. They are 9" long.? I found them at Oreilly's Auto Parts. ?They slide over the end of the muffler then there are bolts that tighten up to hold it in place. The 4" tips work with the size of the heat shield great.
This simplified the install greatly. Gives a small touch of a custom appearance, and wow what sound.
Sound is a funny thing. What are YOU after? For me I have always ridden HD's or V-twins. I am used to having big full strong sound. I don't like straight pipes, or drag pipes, too harsh. I want to hear what I feel when I twist the grip, and I want mindless drivers in their cages looking for me before they see me. I have that and more with this setup. To say I am pleased with how it turned out is an understatement.
I rode 100 miles Saturday and it kept getting better and better. Very low at idle, but thunderous when you are accelerating. The percussion when going under overpasses is awesome. But yet there is no harshness. I have NO popping and if it did anything, it helped the power. I listened to my tunes the whole time with no problem.
I put together a video that shows how they are mounted and a sound clip. Though I used pro microphones, it still doesn't capture the massive sound that is coming out. Again, big sound, not harsh sound. I hope this will help someone else save $$$. The Lord knows we all need a break!

Well, being I only have 300 miles on the bike... I won't be a lot of help in the gas mileage dept. Still showing about 44.6 mpg avg. Everything I could find on fuel map changes seems to indicate not necessary for exhaust only. I plan to make my own Top Plate Breather and add Loydz VFC. When the intake is opened up it will definitely lean it up enough to need a re-map. It would also seem that getting the dealer to do a remap is a waste as they use cookie cutter maps with EPA consideration. One of the aftermarket fuel controllers would allow the most accurate tuning, but you need to be running a stock map for those.
I do not have any surging or noticeable differences in performance. If anything it seems to pull a little harder? Maybe just sounds stronger. 
Every video I do about the Vision from here out will use the "produced for vision-riders" logo, as long as that is alright by you.

I test rode a crossroads with level 1 exhaust. The thrush is most definitely louder than that. A friend of mine who ran an independent shop for a long time (read Harley guy) saw my vision for the first time. Iwas ready for the ridicule but it never came. He was glad to see more American ingenuity. His comment about the exhaust is that it was deep and mellow, sounded strong but not like drag pipes. |

| Nice job on the mod and the video!
I think one of the best things about this particular mod is that you can easily go back to the stock setup if you care to and that ability might be important to those that live in states that do inspections. |

Please, I am no expert. I have had HD's and other bikes for 20 years. I have a set of guidelines I use for each bike.
1. Factory is tuned for EPA, not performance. That means the engine is restricted on the intake and exhaust, so the power is limited.
2. To get the best performance out of a stock v-twin it must breathe. Since you can only push out as much as you can pull into the motor, the greatest effect on leaning out the mix is when you open up the breather. There are many many posts by those more experienced than I, that simply adding slip-ons, which is basically what this is, will have very little effect on the mix, so probably the stock map will work.
If you have the s1l1 remap already, you also have the open breather, right? or K&N, etc. So the map you run is optimized for that. Once I install the breather plate along with the Thrush pipes, I will HAVE to add fuel, or I will be way too lean, which is way worse than running too rich. It has to be addressed either by having the dealer map it, or adding a device like the VFC to provide the right amount of fuel.
For me, based on the conversation with the service manager at my local dealer, I will use a tuner so I can keep it in my own hands. Just like tuning a carb, I need to be able to test the fuel at wide open throttle, check plugs, adjust do it again. Midrange tuning, idle, etc. I don't think the cookie cutter, EPA satisfying maps are gonna put my bike at it's optimum.
So, to answer your question. I put on the Thrush with no changes to the stock map. I do not have surging which would indicate too lean. Everything pulls as smooth as before. Again, I am no expert, I have only my own experience and testing to fall back on. |

I went through one set of pipes already, thankfully second hand, and hardly used since the seller did a near immediate upgrade to the S1L1 (or 2) pipes. If I had known and felt comfortable with this mod, this is the way I would have gone. |

(according to my dealer) the only way i got my vision to run the way i wanted to was to purchase a fuel controller. |

Speaking of being in the middle of the install, I started it with one side stock and cherry bomb on the other. Pretty impressive comparison. |

I just got the mufflers and here are the tips that I am using they are Dynomax tips with logo and are 12" long so it will extend out the back about 3" more and cost $89.64 total just for the tips, but include the ss clamps. So now I will have S1/L1 mufflers for sale.

Usually if it happens at all, it is when cold and I blip the throttle too much while shifting. But again, any pops are few and far between.
A detail I may not have mentioned before, is that I left a 2-1/4 to 2" reducer in the open end of the muffler. I had a 1-3/4 but I didn't like it. The 2" works best right now. Just thought you'd want to know.

I didn't take pictures in-process but the order is:
Remove Lower Plastic Panels from both sides.
Remove Stock Exhaust pipes by loosening main clamp, and 6 mounting bolts (3 per side)
Once the stock exhaust is off you have to cut the straps that hold on the heat shields so you can reuse them with new pipe/hose clamps. I used 4", you will need 6 of them.
Mount the Thrush Mufflers using stock Header to Muffler Clamps.
Secure tail end of muffler with Pipe strap, or new muffler straps to the old locations. You will need new 8 or 10mm bolts as the originals are welded to the old pipes.
Once you have the pipes secured and clamped down tight, Install the Tips (whichever one's you decide to go with).
Install the stock heat shields over the new pipes using 6 Pipe Clamps (4")
That's pretty much it. Some of you that have done it might want to add steps I missed or a technique that you used that was different.
It took me about 4 hours. After your first ride, re-tighten the header to muffler clamp (while hot) to ensure there are no leaks. Make sure your tips are very tight, I actually safety wired mine to the frame so they wouldn't slide off with vibration over time.

I'm going to do this mod over the winter. The tips you used look better than the stock ones and finish off the exhaust better. Thanks for posting it all. |

Pipe strap. Home depot has it. You will need bolts also.

I know this will sound funny but use permatex copper ultra it is heat resistant to 700F. Pull the muffler and put a small bead around the lead edge before you slip the muffler back on and that will seal it back up. |

Tomball, Texas | I did this mod on mine and got to looking and when you bolt the resonator on if you turn it the right way you can run one of the bolts that hold it on through the back hole that held the stock mufflers on for a little more support. Have been running these for a couple of weeks now and it seems like most of the popping is gone. |

Rancho Cucamonga, CA | Do you think the 35" Thrush mufflers will work also? My main concern is that the 31" may be louder than I want. The extra 4" should give a quieter, deeper sound. They also increased the inner pipe size from 2" to 2 1/2" allowing the gasses to expand and slow a little in the chamber. The outer diameter is 4" though, will that still work behind the shield?
Any thoughts about sound volume and quality?
I'm looking for deep but not to loud.

| To LIVV and jeffmack. Thats why I am using these tips. 1) It fits the end of the muffler perfectly. 2) They look great and come with their own clamps. 3) They are double walled so the inner part you see in the first picture runs the length of the tip so when the exhaust gas enters it goes the length of the tip then has to come back before going out, that should help sound and give them back presure. 4) SS means no chrome to rust or pit. 5) These tips are 3-3/4" and 12" long but don't look like it in the pictures. The extra length should look awsome sticking out the back of the bike and help gain back a little tourqe. The only thing I will do different when intallation time comes is to use the tip-overs so I don't have to lay on the ground. I won't be able to do the mod untill I get all the orders done for the armrest. I am making 2 sets a week. I can only work on one thing at a time in the cold. Dain

Green Bay, WI United States | Just a comment, I was told by a dealer that when you change the fuel injection with any type of controller this will tend to take out your MAP sensor. I have the Lloydz VFC on the TCD and on the last ride of this year the "check engine" light came on again, which was a MAP sensor back in the spring. I had de-tuned it for The Fall Ride at Tomahawk and then again late Fall because it was running too rich and getting no gas mileage. Just an FYI to all! Have a Merry Christmas!!!

This is hands down the best/easiest modification I've done to my Vision. I don't have the tips yet because I can't decide which to get. I really want to thank chappellj for posting this. |

Austin, Texas | Okay, so I broke down and did this mod. The hardest part (for me) was getting the stock mufflers off...the one on the left side did NOT want to come off. Anyway, the only real issue I have is that the left side sticks out away from the bike about 1/2" more than the right side. I'm not sure why other than it appears that the pipe could maybe use a bit more bend in it where the muffler attached. I loosened the clamps and this is as good as it gets.
FYI, I did not use any reducer in the system. I may add one just to see what the difference is at some point.
It is a LOT louder than stock...but I love the sound. I'll keep checking for loosening of the tips but so far everything is staying tight. I'm getting a small pop now and then on decel, not sure where that is coming from.
I just wanted to share my experience. It was a good mod for the money.

I like the idea of the exhaust taking a few turns to get out to quiet it down a little. Tell me if you notice much difference from no tip/tip.
I am concerned about a lack of backpressure with the Thrush muffler. Only a Dyno will tell if you end up with a mid RPM hole in torque.
Got the mufflers sitting in the garage, just waiting for tips.

I used safety wire from one of the 3 bolts to an exhaust mount just to make sure the tips wouldn't decide to let go. I have about 1000 miles with it and I don't see any difference in torque or the way it runs, popping is occasional, usually only when cold.
The drone will always be a problem with loud pipes if you are wearing an over the ear helmet. With my 1/2 head helmet I don't have an issue. I worked extensively on my 3/4 head helmet to quiet it down with my previous bike (which was insanely loud compared to this). I dampened the echo by gluing dense foam in the ear cover area. Nearly stopped all of the annoying noises that bounce around in there.
When I ride for more than a scat accross town I use a light grade of ear plug. I can still hear my intercomm fine, but it protects my ears from the loud noises for extended periods. Learned that working on Airplanes, there isn't anyway to get a new set of ears.

Midlothian, Va. | Can anyone tell me if the header pipe fits into the Thrust muffler tightly. I have had a devil of a time getting the back end straight as far as tightness. This is worse than doing plumbing if that's possible and I haven't even torn the bike down yet.

They fit perfect to the tips but not as good at the front but is not that noticeable. You either have to use the step up for the tips to match the muffler which will extend the tips even further or do like I did and weld the tips to the muffler. I asked my muffler man about the life of these mufflers and he said on a bike forever so it then was a easy decision to weld. Unless the fit is very tight clamps won't work and the tips will be very loose. The sound, well I've I've always had loud exhaust on my cruisers but because of the wind management on the Vision even in 6th gear they are still loud or maybe I've just gotten use the quiet sound of the OEM exhaust. Here's the picture attempt and I hope the Army won't have to bail me out again.

And by the way mine will be out the back a little farther then yours because of the 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 reducer so it will make them longer under the chrome shield. I am glad you used the ends I suggested, but wish I had gotten them on first. Lastly did you notice any dif in power or does it feel the same as it did before? You will notice it more on the freeway at about 65mph when you roll on the gass hard. Dain

There is no need to drop down to 5th. I went out today for about 80 miles of just cruising and some hard interstate and did notice more popping than than the very first day and tomorrow I will check the muffler to head pipe and see if I have any leaks. What I like about this is the unique sound that I've never heard before on a bike.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA | Yeah!!! just did the mod. It sounds great! Apparently my bike had S1L1 pipes on it from the dealer and I didn't know, so its already been remapped and the is NO popping at all. Not noticibly louder, but much deeper. I think the CA model bikes prevent it from being too loud (lots of dampening stuff between engine and pipes).
Went with different tips. found them on E-bay, $20/pair shipped

Corona, CA | Nozzledog - we're going to have to get together ! We're doing all the same mods and could really compare notes on what is effective.
I have Atom Bombs on my 08 and they sound great. Semi quiet when at idle but when you lean on it - they bark !
I bought the Thrush mufflers and installed one on the right side and left the Atom Bomb on the other. I started the bike and revved it but I could not tell any difference between to two so I took the Thrush off. This was not a real fair test of the mufflers and they might perform better under acceleration than the Thrush.
I may just go ahead and fab up the mounts for the Thrush mufflers and try them for awhile to see if there is an improvement in the long distance riding comfort (for the wifal unit).
I am going to cut the front and rear parts off the stock muffler and weld them to the Thrush so that I have the stock mounts for the front and back and I can mount my Gatling tips as I would stock pipes. That way they will fit like stock and be secure.
When I was on a ride last week on Hwy 1, I got a lot of time to listen to how the Atom Bombs work at different throttle settings and when I really laid into it going up hills (2 up).
What I found is that they are really loud when accelerating and going up hills. So much so that my wife is not real happy with them on a long cruise.
My question is - has anyone gone from Atom Bombs to the Thrush mufflers ? What did you experience ?

Rancho Cucamonga, CA | Atom Bombs sound alot like Cycledragon pipes. They take the stock can and pack it differently with a straight thru shot. The Atom Bombs use a 2.25 hole all the way thru, cycledragon wouldnt tell me what theirs was, just said small enough so it was quite didn't need a remap. The Thrushes are 2" so I was expecting a lot of volume but didn't get it. I think my bike being a California model has a lot to do with that. I mainly went with the Thrush because of the price and that I had an unlimited choice of tips. I thought I was going to have to quite them down somehow, but nope, they are perfect. If I want them louder I can add a resonator tip.
I wouldn't mind adding permanent mounts to it however, but I won't scrap the S1L1s I had.
Any idea how long before that 'new muffler smell' goes away? |

I don't think the Screaming Eagles I had on my Harley sounded this good. Yes, they are louder, but it's only noticable when laying it on. Otherwise it's just a nice deep tone. I think I'll ride Mt. Baldy tomorrow to see how they sound in a tunnel. |

Can The Gatlin Tips Be Used?
I did the cherry bomb mod and use Gatlin Tips. The set up should be the same. Hope that the photos help to clarify the description.
For strength and friction I used threaded galvanized plumbing pipe that fit into the extensions off of the back of the muffler. Use a Dremel type tool to grind out a little material from the back of the Gatlins to permit the pipe to recess into it about 1/2 ". Use stainless bolts nuts and lock washers (sorry I don't remember the sizes). Run the center of the three mounting bolts up to the pipe and tighten enough to mark where it makes contact - drill a hole to allow the bolt to pass through - (the pipe is heavy enough that you could probably use a smaller drill bit and tap it). As you screw the bolt in thread on a nut and then put on a lock washer before it goes into the pipe. When it goes into the pipe place another lock washer and nut on it. You will want this second nut to start as soon as it can as there isn't much room to tighten it from inside the pipe - finish screwing it in and tighten both nuts towards each other to lock it on. The other two bolts will be shorter so that they just tighten up against the outside of the pipe - use a lock washer on each of these.
One issue I need to go back and take care of is sealing up the back of the tips around the pipe. At the right angle you can see the mounting set up through them. This should have been done before I mounted the tips, but live and learn.
Anyway it can be done. Excuse the ugly photos as I was out riding in some snowy slush this morning.

| They are in the crossover also, They are honeycomb diffusers that help your mid range HP and torque don't mess with them. They also allow heat to be maintained in the head pipe long enough to avoid tweeking a valve. They are not cats, that would be an additional component mounted externally. |

| I bought my Cross Roads with a Stage 1 set up and like it enough. I don't love it but I like it. Following this thread I decided to take a plunge and attempt to do the thrush mod on my XR. The issue I'm running into is the glass pack is too close for my liking to the saddle bags. On the stock exhaust and the stage 1 exhaust the exhaust drops approximately 1.5 inches from the head pipe then back. The stock pipe has an odd hickey to it. A buddy of mine and I have a couple of idea on resolving this but I'd like to keep this in the spirit of the original mod. Cheap, easy, and off the shelf if possible.

| I've pretty much figured out everything to get this thrush mod done on a Cross bike. It's not as simple due to the stock exhaust design. Still though I'm keeping this as an off the shelf mod as possible. Some fabricating or competent exhaust shop work will be required I'm afraid. I'll post on the Cross bike forum here later with a complete how to. Thanks to the originators of this mod! Your experimentation inspired me! |

| I finished the glass pack install on my Crossroads. Consider yourselves lucky to have a direct fit/bolt on mod. It took a bit of fabrication to get the glass pack to fit but it's well worth it.

I havent picked up the bike yet and dont know if the chrome heat shields are like the stock ones or not. Really want to do this mod when I get the bike. Hope I am not disappointed!

| I just did this on my vision. Sounds unbelievable, love this mod. Spent about 60 bucks. Took about three hours to install. The only thing I am not sure of is the thrush mounting. I have One muffler clamp holding it on the back side, which gives it side support, but nothing givng it support on the top. Cant use a clamp for the original 2 top holes, the clamp is in the way of the chrome guard. Any great ideas on mounting?

I had a local metal shop fabricate a bracket that utilized the hole, where the rear factory muffler was bolted on, I used a bolt and nut and lock washer and blue loctite to fasten the bracket to the OEM hole, and then they tacked welded the other end of the bracket to the muffler. seems pretty solid.
I spent a lot of time with various exhaust/muffler pieces of hardware, etc. from the auto parts store trying to fashion something for the rear of the muffler to help support the muffler.
I agree - love the sound - sounds like a V-twin should |

Don't think so.
You've got to remove the saddlebag covers, left and right lower panels, remove both mufflers/heat shields. Thrush mufflesr are 3" diam...stock are 4" so you'll need some type of spacer to make up for 1" difference otherwise, you will crush your chrome heat shields when you tighten the clamps. They you'll have to fab up a couple of brackets to attach the end of your mufflers to the frame brackets. Also fab up a way to mount your tips. Went thru this on the cherry bombs I took off. Wasn't pretty underneath but they sounded nice. Slightly louder than S1L1's.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA | Not as hard as it sounds. You can remove the mufflers without dismantling the saddlebags if you are patient. if not, it is fairly easy to take off the lower skirt anyway. | JUST DID THIS TO MY 2008 VISION,
the install : I used the 24205 thrush muffler from advance auto parts, $22.99 each and i used the 25556 tips from orriely's about $28 each. copper permatex, 4 " clamps 10 each., i laid the bike on its side to work on the left side, (harder side). On the heat shield reinstall, i only used spacers on the front clamps not the rear. make sure you install the tips before the heat shield, seated all the way, then the last clamp on the heat shield will go on after (outer part) the end tip bolts, this will further prevent them from coming off.
yes it sounds awesome.... for next to nothing....and i work for a victory dealer, the sound needed to impress upon the whole staff,...IT DOES. i do have some very minor popping on decel but I still need to re-tighten those factory exhaust clamps after its warmed up. I no longer hear that noisy transmission
I do plan on a remap, and a dyno tune (we Have one).
=========If you cant afford an aftermarket exhaust, then just do it. no one will know the difference=========

Rancho Cucamonga, CA | Make sure not to leave off ANY of the muffler hangers. The Vision has three securing points for a reason. I was using muffler straps on the two off the saddlebags and the front one came loose on the left muffler, but I didn't worry about it because the back strap and the rear bolt by the tips was holding fine. A couple months down the road and I find a cracked weld all the way around on the crossover. It had to be from the stress of the muffler not being supported fully by all three hangers. Luckly I found a muffler welder who could weld it on the bike when I tipped the bike all the way onto the right tipovers with the mirror almost hitting the floor. The guy was amazed I could do that.

| nailer - 2012-06-24 2:10 PM The Stage 1L2's are one piece units. There are no removeable heat shields. Check your local dealers. Some throw customers stock mufflers w/heatshields away. Hopefully, you can find a nice set. you can reuse your stock heat shields but you need new clamps and you can get them at auto store |
